My Family and I spent the weekend away from home visiting some friends in the town of Dalby (2 1/2 hours west of Brisbane). A short 80kms further west of Dalby you find Chinchilla, home of some the best and most abundant petrified wood in the world...or so I hear.
So along with one of my best mates, BJ, and my 4 1/2 y/o son Lincoln I spent Saturday arvo restocking my pet wood stash.
This post contains photos of the hunt, a soon to follow post will have some piccies of the haul.
Enjoy.
Yep, that's a big petrified tree stump Linc is sitting on. This is just outside the visitor's centre where you pay your $5 to use the public fossicking site.
No shortage of rocks out here and maybe 1 in every 5 rocks is a piece of pet wood...too easy!
have a close look and see how many piece of pet wood you can find in just this small area. This is what much of the ground is like.
Linc loves rock hunting. He was picking up anything and everything and had his bucket filled in less than 5 minutes. One of his comments to me was, "Dad, I even love the junky rocks." He found plenty of pet wood too.
Me and my boy. Sometimes I can't believe how much I love this kid! I had such a great time hanging out with him this day.
My very good friend BJ. He is one top fella and he is like a brother to me.
He has never been rock hunting before but was keen as mustard to come out and give it a burl. He had a great time. He was finding heaps of stuff and even as I packed out buckets into the boot of the car, there he was across the road looking for more pieces on the road side. And, as we drove off, I saw him looking out the window trying to see if he could spot "the big one" on the side of the road as we traveled at 100km per hour.
Yep, he got it bad!
BJ and Linc trying to dig out a big piece buried in almost rock-hard clay.
It was a shame to leave this beauty behind but we only had small hand picks, we had been digging at it for 20 minutes, there was a storm coming and it was 5:40pm and time to head back to Dalby.
A final, parting photo.
Check out "Chinchilla Trip...the Haul" post to see what we found.
If you're ever in Queensland, let me know...we've got some wood we need to find.
Have a top day,
Mike
