I live in the Cleveland area, the place where rivers and mayor heads burn. What can I expect to find here? Where would be good places to look?

It's been a while since I've been in Cleveland. I used to go down to the Lincoln Electric plant fairly often. As I remember things are pretty flat there. I would simply leave the city for the farmland. Find an area that's a little hillier than the rest, and ask for permission to look for rocks. Spring time in fields that have been worked but not planted won't be a problem to get into I'm sure. It'll be a little muddy, but that area is glacial so there will be rocks of all kinds. Also ask the farmer if he has, or knows of any, rock piles that he wouldn't mind you taking some. Most farmers are tickled to death to get some fool to take some of their rocks ;D. You can go to this site to ckeck the topography of your area to find where the hills are: terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/default.aspxDon't forget about Flint Ridge either. It's a bit of a drive, but there's some fantastic material to be found there! Good Luck! Ron ps. By the way, when you're done for the day you can always go to The Rock Bottom. They brew some good beer there!

Your best bet would be to find a book about your area. I'm sure there are some published. Otherwise....good luck...

Friday afternoon the sun finally popped out here, so I decided to take a walk in one of my neighbors farm fields. A short 45 minute walk along the side of a ridge produced the following rocks, totaling 47 pounds. The rock in the upper left hand corner is approximately 6.5 inches long. This is just a closer shot of some of the rocks. Another closeup. This rock measure 8" x 7" x 6" high and weighs 12 pounds. I could have picked up hundreds of pounds of rocks, but I had to draw the line somewhere. I just tried to pick an assortment for now. I'll do some additional walks to concentrate on some of the rock types that I find more interesting. Ron

I assume the last rock pictured has a proper name...but man...it looks like a piece of roast beef.
