There is a small mountain out here called 'Picket Post Mountain', and all along the road up to the top there are Apache tears laying about where the road grater has turned them up. It seems they are mining some kind of mineral or something, because you will see (from the photos) that the tears, in some cases are actually bound in the mineral. It is shiney and almost 'Mica like' in appearance. I'll do reasearch to find out more. But for a nice 10 minute walk along the side of the road in 105¼, this is what I collected. Not to bad. I'll have to get up there and make a day of it. Interesting, no? Thanks ...cont. Went back up the mountain and collected another six pounds, and these...

Wow, what a haul. It's amazing what people will cast off in favor of something else. Their loss and your incredible gain.Seems once again the gods are smiling on one of our lot cookie

After I ran them all through a classifier, I had 1 pound 1/4 inch and smaller and 5 pounds all larger on up to the size of golf balls. If it wasn't 105 degrees down here I'd be able to spend all day sifting through the rubble and get a whole lot more. Maybe when it cools off I'll be able to get a few buckets full. Hope, Hope

Great find!
I wish I had somewhere to find little nuggets like that around here ... the only nuggets you find around here is from the rabbits and the deer!
Sounds like an excellent fall trip, when the temperatures are much cooler.
Enjoy,
John

My family is planning a visit to my folks house in Bullhead City, Az. This November. My wifeand daughter are going to fly, my son and I are going to drive, so we'll have plenty of room in the trunk to collect some good rocks !

Don- That is not far from 'Kingman' in the upper West side of the state. Some real good areas up there. If you are serious, I may be able to get you some maps and directions to some sites up that way. Keep in touch, or send me a message.

Banjo, I am so green with evny and jealousy that you live in Arizona! I just love the desert. Monument Valley, the desert in spring, the cactus in bloom and all those wonderful rocks! The extreme heat I can do without but I love everything else about Az. One of these days, I'm gonna get up that way. When I do, I will be lettin' you know so you can point me in the right direction. Or maybe you could be my guide on a rockhounding trip.
Of course, at rate I am going by the time I am able to get up there I might be so old and decrepid, I might have to use a couple of my walking sticks just to get from the front of the truck to the back! ;D
Oh, BTW, those Apache tears are neat! If you go on an all day trip and collect a bunch of them, you know I'll be interested in getting some from you. Are apache tears obsidian?
