OK... I have done many searchs for places to find rocks in Ohio to no avail. All that turns up is Ohio Flint.. not that is a bad thing, because I would love some to tumble, but I would like to know of other rocks I could find. I have found a lot of flint and other pretty stones on the beach and landscape areas, but I have no idea where to look and find good rocks to tumble here. Any help would be wonderful. Harry P.S. What rocks are in Ohio besides flint?

Hey Harry, much of Ohio was hit by the glaciers and as such, you can find just about anything. Look for hills of glacial moraine that were left when the glaciers receded. One way to start is to look for gravel pits. They typically are excavating deposits from the glaciers. Don't underestimate simply walking a farm field in a hilly area. I do it and find agates and petrified wood all the time here in Michigan.

Thank you very much. I will get out and start roaming the fields soon. I do hope to find many good items... but being that I have no idea one rock from another and the fact that I am color blind will make this agreat challenge and a lot of fun. Harry

Hey Harry, a few more tips about hunting the fields. After a field has been worked and then it rains, is a good time to look. The hard rocks like Quartz or Agate tend to really glisten in the sunlight. A lot of the Agate brought down by the glaciers has been polished a lot already. The harder the rock, the harder it is for dirt to stick to it, or so it seems. They tell me that diamonds respond the same way after a rain.

Wonderful information and I do thank you much. Is there anyway you could point me to a BIG photo of rough rocks that I might find here? I believe it may help me in my search. Thank you.

Hey Harry, if you check out my website, I have a lot pictures of raw rocks as I found them and then what they look like when sawed open. That may help as you should be finding rocks very similar to mine here in Michigan.

Hey Ron thanks a million! I have been checking out your site and am thinking of a rock trip to Michigan in the summer maybe! I am dying to get out and find some rocks and will soon. I do hope to find a lot of the good ones. lol I read up on rocks in Ohio and found that the banks of rivers and streams are excellent places to look.
Thank you Harry

Sorry Harry, I should have mentioned the streams and creeks. Another place is any gully or area where water drains. Water will wash away the dirt and leave the rocks. Most gravel pits around here were formed when glacial melt washed through a concentrated area and washed all the dirt away, and left huge deposits of rock. I've been to some of the gravel pits around here and it's astounding to see the acres and acres of nothing but rock!

Hey Ron, I'm glad you reminded me of your website, it had been a while since I looked and it seems to have grown. I like your springer, looks like the one I had growing up. She would chase and fetch ANYTHING you could throw, including rocks. The cool thing is that her mouth was so soft that once she picked up an old fashioned Christmas ball that had fallen off the tree and carried it across the room without breaking it.

Hey puppie, I love Springers. I used to hunt a lot of upland birds and my springers were always the best at it. I can't hunt anymore so my current springer gets pretty spoiled. She still loves to carry things in her mouth though. She'll walk around the yard and pick up a leaf and carry it in her mouth. She acts like she just should have something in her mouth.
You'll notice on site, there aren't any pictures of polished rubys or emeralds yet. I got so disgusted with that crap I don't know if I'll ever finish any of it. I use the "ruby" stuff as filler during rough grinds. All of my emerald is so small, I don't know what I'd do with it if I did polish it.
Now that I have my belt sander, I'm going to try and sand down some of the slabs to see if I can polish any of them. Just waiting now for my silicon carbide sanding belts to arrive.

Hey Ron -- I don't come to this area enough -- I missed your post back in December -- sorry!
Our Springer wasn't a hunting dog, but she definitely knew what it was about; she'd point and flush 'em out and was so obsessive about fetching that she tried to drown herself (and me!) in the Atlantic when her tenny ball got thrown a bit too far out. Great dog!
Sorry about your rubies and emeralds. After a lot of effort I have got a few pieces of ruby/sapphire that polished but most is endlessly the same. I should start tossing it in the rough grinds again. But my emeralds are fabulous, if I do say so myself. Polished like champs!

Hey Harry, you said you are from northern ohio??...which side? east or west?. i am from just south of the toledo area (but live in detroit now) i have been camping and hunting all over the middle and the south of ohio. let me tell you, there is all kinds of stone there...just depends what your looking for. in NW ohio there is alot of sedimentary stone....limestine primarily....but in the limestone pits there are alot of fossils. infact, Centenial quarry lets you go into it and poke around and take stone, fossils out of there. i am not sure if it costs, but if it does it is minimal. the further south in the state you go the better rocks you get, you will still get alot of sedimentary stone, but i have found alot of really cool ones. definitly check the streams and gullies...near pleasent hills camp ground (mansfield area) there is alot of glacieral moraines....infact i can point you to a specific place where you can get alot of different types of stone. further south you get into more of the sedimentary stones that have morphed. things like flint, chert, geodes, quartz, blah blah blah. if you need specifics on anything in ohio let me know...i have been wandering that state with my head looking down for years!

Hello Eric and thank you. Yes I would love to know some good locations to rock hunt. At the moment I live on the West side of Cleveland. I moved here a few months ago from Huron County. I find some nice stuff on the beachs here and some of the local landscape areas, where a lot of small flint pieces can be found, but would love to find some larger items and an assortment. Any directions would be appreciated and you can send them to me if you like through email or a message here.
Thanks, Harry

ok...here are the directions.... its near Perrysville. take st rt 95 south or west from perrysville. you will pass pleasant hill lake campground on the left. now this is where i am not sure if it still looks the same. the last time i was there was 1991. continue for about another mile and on the left there should be an icecream type shop at the corner of covert rd. turn left. there should be a sign for a public boat launch. follow that sign. the road will curve to the left about a mile up the road. the lake will then be on your right. once you get to the top of the hill, maybe a little down hill on the other side, there you should see a small trail going up the burm of the road. once you crest the burm you will see an exposed hillside to your left, and you have found it. it sounds alot harder than what it is...but if you go there you will see its real simple. if there is a house on the property, which there might be by now, go down to the beach...i know there is alot there...all kinds of stuff!!...all nice stones...all kinds!!! good luck!! if you do go there let me know. i grew up camping there and love that place. Eric

Thank you very much Eric. I will do my best to get to this location as soon as weather and time permits. I know I will ask for permission as it is a State Park, but I have had no problems at most places I have visited, but if you don't ask, you can get a really good fine. lol Here is a link to the area: snipurl.com/bv3nThank you very much! Eric, I hope you are still around... I'm going to be in the Cincinnati area in a couple of months, I'd like to do some rockhunting, but it would have to be at places near Cincinnati or near I-65 or I-70 as I will be there for other purposes. I'd appreciate any info. Thanks much!

Hi Eric, I had these thoughts, too. Just don't know how much time I'll have. I'm going to keep studying the rock trails book and hope...Actually, we are landing at Louisville so maybe if there's something along I-75 going NORTH from Louisville I could check it out -- flight gets in midafternoon with no hurry to get to Cincy.
