I have no idea and that's why I am posting this question Where is the best local, state, country, area, or county for rock collecting? I live in Ohio and am wanting to move to a warmer climate so I can be outside 365 days a year! Being locked inside for 6 months every year is enough!!!

Thank you for the wonderful tips and I am leaning towards Arizona, because Oregon gets to much rain and is also cold in the winters. I am going to do more searchs on the states and see just where I would live if and when I moved. I do not want to near the torist areas.

Hey Harry,
Come on down to the Rio grande Valley in deep South Texas! We've got agate, petrified wood, Jasper, flint, fossils, and in all my outings, I have never seen anybody else out rock hunting, so it's all mine!!!! ;D But I'm willing to share. hehehe

Hey Harry We(me and the kids) went on our first ever rock hunting adventure. I found out through these boards that here here in Georgia, there are a few locations for looking for good stone. We chose a place about 3 hours from where we live to hunt for Georgia Amethyst. It was a physically gruelling dig, breaking open 100 lb stones for several hours, but it was awesome! WE will go back. I know they brought back some great stuff on Apollo 11 from the moon. Not sure how to get there and back though. Maybe try Arizona. (Of course after movie Capricorn I, maybe we didn't really go to the moon...lol)

Hey Harry, I've been in Oregon in December and January and as long as you are along the southern coast or anywhere along the Willemette Valley, I found the weather to very comfortable. Besides, you could always go to the Oregon Brewing Co. in Newport where they make the Rogue beers! My favorite brewery bar none!

Harry, Arizona is a great place but don't forget that summers in south Arizona have average daytime temps close to 110F -- you might find that you are able to only rockhound half the year there also, but in the winter instead of the summer.

Not really sure about Oregon.... all that rain?
I know summers in AZ are very hot, but I figure with the humidity we get here in Ohio that 110 would be equal to about 80 and high humidity? I lived in Georgia for 6 years and summers were brutal. The heat index would reach 130. They say it is a dry heat and doesn't feel like it's that hot, but here it is very sticky and miserable. Maybe one reason why I put Florida to the side. Winter would be great, but the summers are horrid!

I have heard people say that Harrison Hot Springs in British Columbia Canada is a great place to go rocking --- mix a little golf and a little rocking. Apparently a lot of the semi-precious and precious stuff is around and the locals don't mind pointing out the best places. And no, I have no financial interest in Harrison at all.

You might want to check out Texas. Lots of different rocks, and really varied weather from one part of the state to aother....big state!
But don't expect MILD if you come here. Texas is always EXTREME!!!

Texas is always EXTREME!!! BE Is the weather nicer down near the gulf or hotter? Where is the best local for rock hunting? I can take the heat, but I do HATE cold!!! Besides... if there is water near by I can always take a dip... providing there are no whale hunters to take a stab at me! lol Harry

Near the gulf in texas it's not just the heat. It's the humidity that comes with it! The heat index can shoot up to over 120 F. The rock hunting is awesome, but you will loose QUARTS of sweat! ;D
