I've lived in Bedford, Massachusetts, USA. for the past twenty years...I do not know of any local areas for rockhounding so I do mine on vacation out Western US. Got a lot of Jasper and Agate from Utah and NM last year. Plus Petrified Wood from Southern Utah which I am tumbling now...This year I'll try my luck around Yellowstone NP and I'll try to find time for Ruggles Mine in NH and some Herkermer Diamonds in NY csroc

Hi All ! I love this website, its very informative. I found this a site a few weeks ago while recoving from minor surgery. I been hooked ever since! I live in san jose california and spend a lot of time diving for jade in big sur. You can still find nepherite jade on the beaches, its usually best after large swells. I am new to tumbling and still learning , its a lot of fun !

Hi Jack, They don't make a tumbler that big, i wish they did. I polished it using a mk grinder with flexable diamond pads and water hose hook up . Its a long process as i spray paint in between pads so i don't miss anything. I start with a rough grind hard diamond disc (80). Then the flex pads up to 8500 grit. This picture down below is my trophy rock, it took me 200 hours to polish over a year, it weighs 230 pounds.

I used to live in NW Washington state, just blocks from Guemes Channel. I would find granite, jasper, agate, some jade, quartz and lots of glacial till. My area was carved by glaciers and it showed if you went out to the San Juan Islands. Tiger Eye and amethyst could be found out in the foothills of the north Cascades. Now I live on the high plains of NE Colorado and I haven't a clue what these rocks I've found are. I'll post a picture after I've gotten them polished and hopefully someone can tell me what they are. Thanks, Wendy

Oakland County, Michigan
Like Ron said, just about anything, thanks to the glaciers that plowed across the state.

I live about 4 blocks from Sandia Peak here in Albuquerque NM. The West face of the mountain is pink granite mostly... boulders and boulders of it everywhere. I have to drive about 15 - 30 miles to get jasper, agate, turritella, and pet wood, mostly from terraces above and all along the Rio Grande Rift Valley. Most rock along here are smooth and round, having been tumbled for eons and left in gravel beds hundreds of feet thick. cuervo

I'm in beautiful Victoria B.C. Canada
What do we have to offer to rock hounds? Here are some of the more common finds...
(1) Dallasite: Near "Mile 0" at the beginning of the Trans-Canada highway in the heart of Victoria is a beach known for this mineral washing up on it after storms. Dallasite can also found sparcely on most South Island beaches if one knows how to spot it.
(2) Muir Creek fossil bed: A 25 minute drive West of Victoria and a mere 10 minutes past Sooke B.C. is a beachside bed of exposed ocean fossils that lure many a rock hound to the intertidal zone where collection of fossil specimens can not be regulated. Most of the fossil bed is buried under private property but the section of beach where the exposed bed is being eroded by the sea is open to the public to enjoy & collect samples. Access is tide dependant so it is not easy to pay it a visit.
(3) Rhodonite: Hill 60 in Cowichan Lake is the largest producer of Rhodonite. Subject to several mineral claims, Hill 60 is actively being mined for this mineral. An additional source of rhodonite is found on Saltspring Island, north of Victoria in the strait of Georgia. The site is called "Patricia" and is also subject to private claims. Rhodonite can be collected from these claims for a fee charged by the claim owners. Rhodonite can sometimes be found washed up on Sidney Island or on North-East beaches on South Vancouver island.
(4) B.C. Jasper Beach combing is a popular past-time for many local resident rock hounds & craft makers. Red/Blue B.C. Jasper can often be found in small quantities in local beaches on Vancouver Island. It is a remarkable stone consisting of dark blue patches in a hard red quartzite substrate.
There are other minerals found throughout the area but the above mentioned are just a few of the more well known popular targets for rock hounds. Beach glass can be found in abundance in different colors and makes for an excellent tumbling project.
