Howdy-
Just got my first tumbler and now I'm ready to start finding my own stuff once spring arrives. Does anyone know where some nice places are to find stuff?
I'm familiar w/ Topaz Mtn. Would love to find some obsidian. What would be good for a beginner?

No. Obsidian is not one of the easier rocks to tumble. Try starting with something harder. Quartz and agates will polish a lot easier with fewer problems.

Send me an IM and I'll get you soem information. I have the whole state of Utah mapped out with the locations of most of the good spots.
There is A LOT of Obsidian just past Topas Mountain. You just have to walk around and pick it up.
I did a batch of it and it turned out well. I even tumbled some with Agate and they turned out well.

Hi Gaetzchamp, I've been to Southeastern Utah and there are many, many great locations. Collected agate and some small jasper at Joe Wilsons Arch, just a bit South of Moab. Collected more of the same around Dewey Bridge just North of Moab. Collected "Devils Toenails at Fossil Shell Hills outside of Capital Reef, plus nice red and black agate along old Notum Road. Got some nice Petrified Wood and small colorful jasper near the Bullfrog turnoff going towrd Lake Powell

You should try Milford area. Lots of neat places down there. In fact, just before you get to Milford, there's a place where they used to find Banded Opal. It used to be a pay-to-dig site, but the guy got into trouble over something he did wrong, and now it's open to public. There's lots of neat purples, yellows, reds, pinks, and even oranges. The material tumbles well, but you need to find some of the not so soft pieces. Good_luck, and if you need any other help, I'll do my best to help out. I just moved to Oregon but grew up in Utah my whole life. E-mail me Sholmes903@aol.com Steve

Anyojne know of sites for rock in Northern Utah (Besides Dugway) ? I have found a listing for agate in Summit County East of Silver Summit, but it's all under snow at the moment... Guess I have to plan a Trip down south, but I am hoping to find places I can run to on the 'spur of the moment', and live in Heber (East of Provo).

Not too far from you there is Birdseye (in Birdseye), Onyx in Nephi, Agate in Eureka & Levan, Not too far outside Eureka there is Wonderstone, Out past Little Sahara there is Topaz Mountain where you can find Topaz, Obsidan, Jasper & Agate.
Thats about it without having to go further South.

Now if you want to drive a bit . . . There is LOTS of agate in the Green River area. Moab is full of hounding sights, The Henry Mountain Range (East of Capital Reef), Torry has some of the best Peterfied Wood in the State (West of Capital Reef). Escalante & Grand Staircase also have Peterfied Wood. There is also a TON of great sights between Cedar City & Saint George.

I found this place Saturday with my son while we were getting driving hours in for him. Go west through Lehi, CederFort, etc. When you get to the Faust road sign turn South, past the paved road and take the Right hand wide smooth dirt road Southwest. Follow that for about 6 miles, you'll see a large rock quarry on the left (south) of the road. Thake the road that leads over to it, but be sure to par out of the way. You can't enter the quarry as it's posted, but there is a lot of tailings dumped out side on the hill that we can look through, and I found some nice large pieces and some great little ones. This stuff has brown and black layers with white calsite between them. Not sure how it will tumble as calsite is rather soft, but we'll see - I'm going to cab some of it and cap it with quartz. I'll post some pic in the picture section when I get a chance Jeff
