NM is a great place to rockhound...the Harding Mine, the Kelly Mine, Blanchard, and many others for all you mineral collectors. There's Rockhound State Park in the southern part of the state. Copper minerals, obsidian, fossils, optically clear calcite, pegmatites, quartz, agate (including Thundereggs), desert roses. staurolite. You name it! And for y'all's tumblers, tons of top quality agate, jasper, apache tears and petrified wood. The High Desert treasures are the BEST. Y'all are invited to our Albuquerque Gem and Mineral Club's Treasures of the Earth 2005 Gem and Mineral Show taking place @ the Albuquerque State Fairgrounds March 18th thru 20th. The featured mineral is fluorite. SEE YOU THERE - Susan

Hi Susan, last time I was in NM I went to the "Lincoln Days Festival" in Lincoln. Had a great time and saw the play about Billy's escape. Everyone was so amazed that I came all the way from Michigan just for their festival (not really, was sightseeing and wanted to see where Billy The Kid lived and just happened to hit the right weekend!). I sure wish I was into the rocks then. Keep thinking I want to come back when I can spend more time. I've even considered living there in the winter.
Good to hear from you. Ron

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I lived in the Chicago area for 16 years, so NM has been a Paradise (for the last 25 years) for me. We have mountains and deserts. It's wonderful in the Winter, although we DO have winters, unlike Arizona. Great place if you like to ski. Lincoln is very pretty, a bit tourist-y for me. I'm sure your life would benefit from any season spent in NM! It truly is "the Land of Enchantment". Susan

Hey Susan, I don't mind having winter, I just don't want it to last 9 months like it does here. I also like the drier air. Everyone in Michigan has sinus problems. When I was watching the play in Lincoln, I was wearing my cowboy boots and my Stetson. There was a guy sitting in front of us with his family. He was wearing flowery shorts and a Hawaiian shirt with flip flops. Two teen age boys came riding in on their horses and came up and sat by me. They looked at the flowery guy in front of me and the one said to the other, "Hey, look at the guy with the plastic Jesus slippers". There for a minute I thought I was sitting next to Will Rogers! Hi Susan,
Thanks for the invitation, it's definitely on my calendar! Moved to NM about six months ago and love it here.

I can understand why you love NM so much. I visited late September and just loved it. I went to the well visited places, Sante Fe, Albuquerque, Taos and some rockhoundigin the northwest corner of the state(Abique Res and Pedernal Pk and Grants)...I'm sure I'll be back again sometime, maybe to retire?
