Hey y'all I know there are a few people here from Kansas and I was wondering if you've had any good finds in KS and where good places might be to look? I'm really not interested in flint or limestone, so I may just be out of luck! Aaron

We'll be heading for Junction City, KS in a couple of weeks. Would like to know if there's anything good for collecting out there. We're coming from spending the winter in S. AZ, so aren't exactly rock-poor, but will have a couple of days to kill (having work done on the RV so will have to wait for that). Will be spending the summer in some beautiful jade country. We go for the gold, but go rockhounding when we're not in the water sucking up the yellow stuff.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. JoAnne

Hi JoAnne!
FINALLY, I can give some info to someone on this board! As a newbie, it's a rare occasion when I can actually HELP instead of being helped - this feels great!
Way back when I was a child (never mind just HOW long ago!), we lived in Chapman, KS - a small community west of Junction City. We used to play at "fossil hill" . . . . a location which offers up some pretty neat fossils and small geodes. Don't believe you will find much of anything for tumbling purposes here, though as if memory serves me it's pretty much all limestone. IF you are interested in an outing for fossils etched in limestone and/or picking up some geodes (the largest I can remember finding was slightly larger than a golfball), I can help you find a neat place!
From Junction City, KS travel due west on I-70 to the Chapman exit (about 12 miles) - there's only one exit for Chapman. Turn left off of the exit traveling south to Chapman. Keep straight until you hit Highway 40 (used to be a 4 way stop . . . might be a red light now!) and turn west (right). <If you cross railroad tracks, you went too far and just drove across Hwy 40, turn around and go back! LOL! > At the west edge of town, running alongside of Hwy 40, you will find a limestone cliff on the right (north) side of the road. It's immediately on the side of the road, but there is room to park between the cliff face and the roadway - barely!
Once there, you will see lots of loose rocks laying on the ground at the face of the hill - a closer look will show you that a number of those "rocks" are actually small geodes! By carefully working loose the small pieces of limestone from the face of the cliff you can also find numerous fossil impressions of any number of different types of seashells.
Hope this info will help make your trip more enjoyable! Again, don't know if you will find any rock to tumble, but there are many other little treasures hiding at this particular spot! Happy hunting!

Thanks so much! I do a LOT of cabbing & wirewrap, so love to get hold of all kinds of different stuff to play with. My tumbling tends to be small pieces I pick up & scraps I've trimmed off my slabs. Get some really interesting stuff that way. Anxious to get out there & look for this stuff.
Thanks again, Jo

You are most welcome, Jo! Hope that you will be pleased with this site. Not sure if anything there could be tumbled, but I KNOW you can find small geodes and fossils there! Look forward to hearing how the outing went, after you have a chance to check the place out!

I know this thread is really old, but I'm a newbie from Kansas, and found it after doing a Kansas search. I noticed that someone said you could find moss opal in Ashland?? My boyfriend's parents live there, I'd love to go hunting for it next time I am there. Any tips on how/where to find it?
