Does anyone have some area locations for NM, mainly in the South Eastern part as I don't want to be driving forever? Some directions, maps, whatever would be useful as I'm new to NM

Get yourself a Gem Trails of NM book at your local rockshop - it's "the Bible" of NM rockhounding...will lead you to you sites all over the state. I, personally, haven't done much collecting in the SE quadrant. (forgot to log in...) Susan

flowie, Have you been down/over to the Deming area? I know that isn't the SE exactly, but it may be a doable day trip if ya start early enuff. Aren't you in Alamo?
There are lots of places around Deming:
1. Rockhound State Park of course: thunder eggs primarily up on top of the ridge; other stuff around back side of the ridge.
2. 4-5 mi. S of Rockhound State Park, are the Florida Mts. There are some old mines around the S and W sides. There is no road per-se around that side, so you just have to drive down coming in from the N side where it just keeps going straight up into the Mts, park in one of the camping areas, and hike/climb around to the W side. There are varieties of minerals in the mine tailings.
3. about 20 Miles NE, on state road 26 back to Hatch, there are 2-3 turnoffs to the Left onto dirt roads going back 10-15 mi. to the N/NW which have jasper, chalcedony, some pet wood, and some carnelian; just off the road, and in the arroyos.
Try it. ed

Thanks Ed, will have to try it but first need a diff vehicle to take that route as all I have is my boyfriend's Honda Civic and he wouldn't be too happy with me driving it in that terrain.........LOL Deming is a couple of hours from me but have been wanting to go there, just haven't made it yet but thanks for the tip on that route to the mines. Will definately check that out as soon as I get a chance
