My wife and I have recently taken up rock and mineral collecting after our roadtrip to out west (from Ohio to California and back...north route on the way, south route back) visiting many of the National Parks along the way (and out of the way). Since then we've taken to rock tumbling some nice things we've picked up locally and collecting various minerals from rock shows.
We're planning another trip thru the Northwest (from Ohio to Washington/Oregon and back) and were thinking about stopping along the way to do some rockhouding on our own.
Can anyone here make suggestions of good places for beginner rockhounds to visit in OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, ND, SD, MN, WI, IL, or ID? We're leaving this weekend, so we don't have a lot of time to make arrangements with private property owners to schedule visits, unless someone can recommend somewhere that's really easy to get access to.
Since this will be our first time rockhounding, any advice on etiquette or other things we should know would be welcome. (Chipping away at the face of Mt. Rushmore would be frowned on, right?)

I've had great luck on Belt Creek in Montana. It is located about 25 miles southo f Great Falls on hwy 89 just off hwy 200. Trun off hey 200 onto 89 go less than a 1/2 mile and on the left you will see a place where vehicles have been parking next to a creek. This will be Belt Creek...and it is open to the public at this spot. Forget about working the Yellowstone River..no access places. There are many little creeks you will find between Great Falls and Butte....some will pave small areas where you can park.
Good luck on the trip ....hope you find a bunch.

If you're going to be around Hinckley, Minnesota, you could check out along the St. Croix River. I've heard that's a good place but I've never been there myself.
