I'm going Southwest this Fall(for a week). Someone posted(possibly on Yahoo Rockhounds?) some Turquoise collecting sites between Kingman, Az and Las Vegas; they specifically mentioned Duvall Mines and White Hills. Anyone care to comment on this? tks csroc

It rings a bell- I think I read about some metal detectorist who found some Mined Turquoise in the mountains near Duvall mines- They traced it back to an 1800's wagontrain load that was capture by Indians or something- They showed some pictures of 10 Lb + Nuggets!

Yea that was pretty much what these Metal detectorist said- I looked for the article but I have not found it yet- I seem to recall them hauling like 50 or 60 pounds of it out of the mountains! I guess this was not the only load that has been lost- so Keep your eyes open

Tks for5 looking Stefen...I found the article with these locations, I was hoping to get some updated info: a) from anyone who might have been there in recent months... or b) from anyone who might have some idea of what Turquoise looks like in the rough! give me a better idea of what to look for, Is it on the surface, embedded in other rocks, etc...(people who have mined turquoise are probably yucking it up about now... or c) you'd have better luck with a one arm bandit than of finding turquoise these days...
in any event this was the original post from Yahoo Rockhounds...
> I do have some good news for you tho, on Highway 93 going North toward Las > Vegas, at the Duvall Mine on the right side of the road, there is still > Turq. on the south side of the mine. > Take the Landfill turnoff up to the mine and drive along their fence, > drive around the back, > and head to the South/West corner and that Large Mountain is called > "Turquoise Mountain" > hunt on that Mountain and you will find it! > NOTE: the mine has a full Chain link Fence completely surrounding it. > > There is also more going up Highway 93, about 40 miles, at the White Hills > turnoff. You do not turn right toward White Hills, but go Left into the > Mountains, following the dirt roads.

We are going for a week and flying in and out of Vegas. My real destination is Southwest Utah, Bryce, Zion, Kanab, Cedar, the Hogsback, Slot Canyon Hiking. I'm trying to discretely pack in the time we're not at National Parks and Hiking with rock hounding. Will be collecting some Petwood, agate and Jasper and if I am real lucky some Geodes(or are they Septerian nodules?). We went to Southeast Utah last year(Arches, Canyonlands, Capital Reef, Monument Valley, Moki Dugway)this is one awesome area!
In any event I had to give half the week to my wifes plans so we'll be spending some time in Vegas. I loved it at one time but it's gotten so expensive...Gambling is only fun when I'm winning so that eliminates that possibility!
I'm really looking for some escapes while I'm in Vegas, I get antsy after an hour or two. My wife can play slots for a good amount of time, she can go from casino to casino. I get bored as soon as I lose my allotted stake. I can usually last for hours at the blackjack tables or at the sports book, but slots kill me. In any event Turquoise is something she would even love to find!

i was in Vegas once. spent all of the daytime hours in the pool. i spent $10 in the hotel slots and the rest of the time eating good cheap food and goggling at all the lights. Vegas is a great vacation destination if you don't gamble. i can't imagine being out of the AC tho, 100 degree temps are OK withing 5 feet of the pool........

I don't expect the heat to big a major issue...it usually cools down in Late September...that dry heat out west is not as sapping as the humid heat back east! (unless it's over 100) ... I liked Vegas better when rooms were cheap and shows were $10-$30 for headliners...now they take your money gambling and everywhere else, except the buffets which are still pretty cheap...The sights are spectacular, The rollar coaster at NY NY is great and I'm sure I'll love it...I'll be calling on Tell and Gaetz for the inside scoop!

I did get to the SW at the end of September. Made the side trip to look for Turquoise to the Kingman area...Did not find anything myself...the turquoise is not jumping out to you...at least not where I looked...had a great time anyway...loved a little town named Chloride, friendly gent in the local store..we could've chatted all day...he knew no secret locations..just pointed to the hills and suggested trying some worked over old claims...had already stopped a couple of times and my wife had had enough so we didn't find anything there. Picture of a fence entering Chloride: We found rocks in SouthWest Utah, not as good as SouthEast Utah but plenty even for someone who spends as little time as I do rockhounding. Nice little rockshop just off the Interstate as I was going toward Zion: My favorite was looking for Septarian nodules near Kanab, Utah...we went to a location in Alton and on a claim owned by Joes Rock Shop...Joe had the best Sepatarians, quantity and quality...Our timing was not too good however as the roads were very slick and I was afraid of driving in wet clay...we did manage to find some pieces but no whole nodules: typical road: sharing the collecting area with the local ranchers:
