I am headed to Michigan for a lampwork bead class in Lansing Oct. 8. Driving from Green Bay, WI I thought it would be a great idea to side trip around the north end of Lake Michigan and stop in Petoskey in search of stones. Would someone please share knowledge of hunting spots for the stones? I have read of two places: the state park and Maguns Park. Any other spots? Thanks for any help.

You may want to send a PM to Michigan Rocks. I thinks he's found them in the past and may have some ideas.
Petoskies are way cool. I bought one on Ebay for about 2bucks. I haven't done anything with it yet, but it's cool. I've heard of people finding them here in Utah by the Great Salt Lake.
Good luck.

Hey Roxanne, you can find lots of Petoskey Stones on the beaches of most any of the lakes in the area. I've been on lakeshores near Pellston that were just solid with Petoskey Stones. Stop at one of the local greasy spoons in the area, especially outside of town, and ask for some good local areas. Tell them you're from out of state and be courteous and they'll help you.

ps By the way, check out the City Park Grille. It was one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite hangouts.

i'm certainly no expert, but my neighbor took his family to higgins lake state park last summer and his son found about two gallons of petosky stones on the walking trails and in the campground. the rangers showed him what to look for since they were not polished by the water at all they look a little different. he found them up to baseball size!
my son and i have found a few in the wash along lake michigan in manistee, i tease him by calling them manistee stones...
good luck, jerry
