I have just collected the most incredible stuff from the rock beds in the Badlands and Black Hills areas. Located the sites from the "rock trails" series and even though the book is dated, we could find the sites. So if anybody is driving across the US on I-90, plan on a day or so to find some fabulous rocks. More direction available on request.

KD, I have posted several photos since we returned in late July. A few of the rough rocks and then a few of me with SD as the background. I actually have a large batch or batch and a half done, which I will soon photo, I was waiting on batch 2. This stuff is blowing my mind.
One really cool thing is that if you go to the National Grasslands office in Wall, they will tell you how to find the sites, which are open and which are private property, and you can buy a map.
Stefan, where are you on I-90?

In 2001 I was at Mt. Rushmore for the 4th of July. I think I'll always remember that sight with fireworks over top the mountain.

Ron, I've been wracking my brain trying to remember which year we could have timed the 4th at Mt. Rushmore. The weird thing is, as it turned out they didn't have a display and the explanation was that they didn't want to siphon off people from the local town festivals.
I love I-90. I love getting to Sioux Falls and making that left turn. In fact, one time I was so excited about it I forgot to get gas, and found out how really dark it is out there after you make that left turn! Saved by finding an unattended self service station. First I've ever seen. Scary empty place.
The trip to the rock beds was like nothing I've ever experienced and over time, probably the most remote-feeling places we've ever driven have been in SD.
