I will be going to Amarillo, TX in October and was wanting to know if anyone out there has been/knows of places to rockhound. Palo Duro state park is just south of Amarillo but park rules state you can't remove/keep what you find. I've been there a couple of times and it is pretty cool - www.palodurocanyon.com/Anyway, any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Rock, Amarillo is not too far from the Alibates Flint National Monument and Lake Meredith Recreation Area. Like Palo Duro Canyon, it is verboten to rockhound in those areas. Part of the problem with Texas, is that there is little public land, and what little there is forbids rock collecting. I was thinking, though, that perhaps there are opportunities in the couty and state roadcuts in that area or local parklands. Does DFW area have a gem and mineral/geology club? Check with them -- there may be a known collecting site or a planned field trip while you are there. Where do you collect in the Dallas area, btw? matt (in houston -- land without native rocks)

Matt,
Don't know if there is a rock club in Dallas but they have everything else, so why not. I'll check with the "Rock and Barrel" (only local store to buy anything) if anyone knows they will.
As far as collecting anything so far there is but one thing to do - go to Lowes and buy 50lbs of what I think is called Desert Rock which is agate with some nice coloring. Most of my rock have come from GA, NC, Ark, and the west coast in San Fran and Santa Barbara beaches. Lots of cool stuff on the beaches of the west coast. I was there last week in Santa Barbara and brought back about 50 lbs of stuff I collected on the beach.
Anyway thanks for the help.
