My husband and I live in East Texas (on Sam Rayburn Lake) and I've just started tumbling rocks. Hubby bought me a Lortone tumbler for an early Christmas present - he didn't know the monster he was creating with that single purchase! Am loving everything to do with tumbling! Have found some rocks near home (a few quartz that I can identify - am clueless on what the others are) that I'm presently using to tumble. Anyone here from this part of the country with any thoughts on good places to look for rocks to feed the tumbler? Not looking for anyone's "special place" just some general guidance and thoughts on places to look. Most of what I've found so far has been either sandstone or palm wood.

Here are some areas that you can check out.
Livingston Area - lots of pet wood also lots of private land! Bedias - tektites (believed to be jewel-like bits of meteoric glass) Trinity North to Crockett area - pet wood and jasper -> can find on both in any stream bed and or road between these two towns. Holly is between these two with the white rock creek near by. Toledo Bend Reservor - pet wood, jasper, agate and palm wood -> there are two dirt roads on either side of the Sabine river just south of the dam with good collecting spots on either side
Where you are:
Lake Sam Rayburn - pet wood, best place to start is Brock's landing, then work your way around the lake's edge. Caney creek recreation area also offers some good places to look
Hope this helps and welcome to the board

Hi Robert! THANKS for your welcome and all the info! I'll be checking the Caney Creek area for sure this weekend and will make a run up to Crockett area, too, if the time can be worked in. Truly appreciate all the help . . . will take a LONG time just to touch base with all the options you have mentioned. Appreciate your help - have a great weekend up in Dallas!

Hi, This weekend I am planning a trip to the House ranch near Three Rivers, Texas. THe man [Kurt House] charges $10 a day per person and is very nice to talk to. I will let you know how the hunting went later. His ranch is listed in Gem Trails of Texas also tho the copy I just bought gioves the old phone and since it's printing Miss Mildred is now residing in a nursing home. She is 90 now and Mr Kurt runs the ranch and lives in San Antonio.

Hello! Thanks for posting the info - I'll be very interested in hearing how your hunt goes - hope that you have a great time and a successful trip! I'll be in the San Antonio area later this year (in the late summer, I believe) and might be interested in a hunting trip as well. Am VERY happy to report that I have found one area - between Zavalla and Woodville - that has some real pretty rocks in it. I THINK they are jaspers, some I know are quartz. Found this area while walking my dog on a hike through the pines . . . got a huge sack full of stones and plan to return again early next month! Not sure exactly what it is that I've picked up, but they are sure pretty and should make great tumbling rock! I'll post results on tumbling them later - - Again, hope you have a very successful and fun hunt!

I can definitely vouch for Lake Livingston. I went there on Saturday and picked up about 50 lbs of rock, most of it pet wood. Some jaspers and a few beach rocks that might turn out nice. I hope to go back real soon. matt

Matt, it sure sounds like you had a great outing, too! Pet wood is plentiful here on Sam Rayburn, too, along with palm wood. Beach rocks . . . . hmm, I like that term! Since I can't identify most of what I'm finding I'm gonna take your lead . . . . . . I found some pine woods rocks on Saturday! By golly, that'll work! There are some mighty pretty pine woods rocks, too!

Might have to make a short trip early Spring.

Pete,
As soon as we get some sun here, I will take pix of the stuff I found at Lake Livingston and post them. It's got some great color, including what appears to be a very navy blue and some dark reds.

Update: Due to the time it would have taken to send money to Mr Kurt and the fact that waether is supposed to be bad this Saturday, Pops and I will try the 3 ranchs near Mason, Texas and see if we can strike it rich after the rain uncovers that lode of topaz that is just waiting for us to find there! Eill let you know what we found and how much. Mike

Hello to all of you, But to all you east Texas people... I live just across the Louisiana Texas border in Sabine Parish .The small town of Many Louisiana. I go to the Toledo Bend dam often. And Deb there is tons of Petrified wood off hwy 255 close to Sam Rayburn.( but it is on a hunting lease) I have a beautiful slice of petrified Live Oak with druzy that came from there in fact I have two slabs. I think I am going to list one of them for sale on here soon. Anyway maybe some of us could get together and have a little rock hunting trip around the lakes. If any of you are interested just send me a PM. Have a good time rocking

Kurt is a good guy and you can find some neat wood on his place, just keep an eye out for snakes!
