I have to go there for a vet show in Feb and seeing how I only gamble with my life and when buying rocks wanted to know if there are any good places for rockhounding. Will probably only have a 3-4 hour window during the day so any help would be nice.

Hi Robert, I always plan on going out houndin' when I go to Vegas but those darn drinks and my propensity to throw my money away always get in the way! Anyway I ordered a book, "Rockhounding Nevada" and when it gets here (hopefully today or Monday) I'll look up some nearby places and get back to you.

I'm going to Las Vegas in July. Can you give me some information as well?

Henderson is just south of vegas if it isn't already overtaken ----but there use to be a rock shop there about 2 blocks off the main drag going thu town ---few years back he gave me directions to a place north of vegas that was a vein of amethystine (?)---quartz with a light mix of amethyst in it ---seems like it was maybe 12-15 miles out ---off on a dirt road and the vein was running thu a hill side --was open to digging if you felt like it ---need a hammer and chisel, &/or pick to dig it out --I had a 30# piece in my suitcase when I came home--hehe

Hear that you can find a lot of Coprolite in the Casinos. Isn't that what a crap table is for? LOL

There is a nice limestone ridge due west of downtown, lots of shells imprints. This is along the Spring Valley loop, north end, between the loop road and Vegas, north of the Gypsum mine. On the west of the Vegas valley is Sunrise mountain, its built up at the base but you should be able to pick around some of the open areas. Also, driving through Boulder City and the Lake Mead road will take you through some very nice desert with lots of outcroppings to pick at. There are some very beautiful sandstone formations in the Valley of Fire, plus petroglyph's to see. To the south of town is Black Mountain, the remains of a volcano. This is the source of the lava rocks that are everywhere in the valley (that is, where there isn't a golf course or casino). When I was young, I lived on that end of town, just between Henderson and the outskirts of Vegas, found some nice Jasper bits on the desert floor there. but I'm afraid that the city has overrun all my favorite wash beds and hill tops. Hope you have a Great time.
