Hi, I live fairly close to the Green River Gorge in Enumclaw, and would like to drive out there someday soon. Anyone in WA area know if there's anything good out there?

I drove out that way this afternoon. I couldn't find any public access to the river, but some of the places out there look pretty spooky...

If you're talking about looking in "Gems and MInerals of Washington," I just got it from the library today. I haven't found anything in it yet about this area. I do know that there are some old mining areas around, and thought there might be something interesting.

I just found reference to the gorge in the book. That area around Black Diamond is known to have Realgar, but I don't even know if it's desirable to me. I just want stuff to tumble or to trade for tumbling material.

There's good snowboarding up there near Enumclaw, Crystal Mountain is the best in the area! LOL I'm sure there is some Petrified Wood up there. There are the rivers to check out, you can get to the river in Greenwater, I think there's a place to hike all the way down at Mud Mountain Dam too. Those river beds are all rock of all sizes. Might be a good idea to wait till the waters recede though because that water is cold enough to give you hypothermia in a minute or so, it's all glacial melt.

You wouldn't believe how close Mud Mt. Dam is to me! I just have to hit this windy back road from here and I'm there!
When I was driving around the gorge area yesterday, as well as Black Diamond, there are a lot of old gravel roads, but all are well posted with no trespassing signs.
According to "Gems and Minerals of Washington," Realgar can be found across the river from the Green River Gorge Park. I could not find any access to get down to the river from there. I have heard of a swimming hole that locals use, but need to ask around to find it. Everything out here is posted with a lot of No Trespassing signs.

Flaming Geyser State Park has a trail that I think goes down to the water.. been a long time since I have been down there. On up the way toward Rainier though, there are lots of places to pull over and get to the river from the freeway, some official pull outs some not. One of the field trips coming up for the local rock clubs (those associated with the state one) is to Greenwater, they were showing some spectacular multicolored jaspers. When i found out where that is, I'll let you know Maybe we can make it one of our field trips this summer... In the summer, you can hike all over Chrystal Mountain, though from what I hear they decided to discontinue running the chair lift in summer so you have to hike up as well as down now. Last time we were up there we did actually find a few chrystals, though I hear its a particular valley where the mountain gets its name from on the other side from the ski resort. Wonderful blueberry picking on some of the ski runs though

Greenwater is just about 30 minutes from my place, and I have been forming the idea of hosting a club trip there this summer. I could even scout ahead to make sure we know where we're going, etc. Then we could BBQ at my place here on the hill above Enumclaw. Jolene I suppose we should leave the horse jokes at home...

Yeah thats the area the trip is scheduled for... I think That trip is in August though, so if you find it before then, let me know I head down to Enumclaw a couple times a year, since one of my suppliers is down there. If i know of a good place to find some rock, I might just have to make a longer day of it and go exploring
