Well, I'm going down to Santa Fe next Monday for about 3 weeks. I'll be working on a Lowes. I'm hoping that I'm close to maybe some members here, or at least some good rockhunting areas. I will have Sundays free to go out and explore. I met a guy at the Geode Beds last Saturday who was from Albequerque, and he told me of a canyon called Hondo Canyon in which Staurolites could be found. He said that was fairly close. Any confrmations would be nice....as well as anyone wanting to hook up with me and do some hunting would be really COOL!!! It's going to be hard being away from the forum for sooo long...I know I'm going to go through withdrawals.  PM me if anyone is close enough with a free Sunday. Thanks ya'll Steve |

Steve, Try the Harding Mine in Dixon. It is about 45 miles north.
Head north to Taos from Santa Fe US 285. In Espanola, take Hwy 68 North to Taos. About 19 miles north of Espanola ( a little past Valarde ) is Hwy 75 East to Dixon and Penasco. Stop in Dixon at Labeo's Store to sign a liability release. Take hwy 75, 6.1 miles east from dixon. There will be a dirt road on the right. Go 0.6 mile up the dirt road to a gate. You will walk from the gate.
The mine is owned by UNM Geology Call to make sure all is ok 505-277-4204
Here you will find purple lepidolite, rose muscovite, calcite, feldspar, apatite, and green tourmaline. I have never been here, this info is from a book.
For Agate go to Abiquiu Lake. From Espanola take hwy 84, 32 miles northwest to Abiquiu lake. Take hwy 96 across the dam and go 4.1 miles from hwy 84. Agate is on both sides of the road. Check the Abiquiu Lake post for some Agate pictures. I have been to this location you will love it. If you get hot go to the lake and swim. If you walk around the dam there is lots of agate also.
Wish I could join up but I can't even find the time for a local rock hunt.
