This weekend I'll be rock climbing in Red Wing MN which is along the Mississipi River. I thought that Lake Superior fed into the St. Croix which feeds into the Mississippi right near where I'll be but looking at the map it doesn't appear to be so. Would this be a place to find lots of Lake Superior Agates or should I concentrate more on my climbing?

If you can find some gravel bars to hound you might spot some agates. The important thing to remember about Superior agates is that they are found in the glacial sand and gravel deposits carried down from Lake Superior itself. In that reigon there is also alot of sedimentary clay covering the gravel. The gravel pits around Red Wing have produced some very nice agates and maybe the Missippi river has cut though some of these beds and exposed those gravels. Good luck and let us know what you see.
