Rivers!!! If you can't get access to a river from private land then you can get to 'em via public right of ways....like where a public road crosses a river. Then you can walk up the river on the banks...most land owners do not mind this but don't wander away from the river on to private land. Heres what you might find: Lots of Pet Wood and some Pet Palm Unidentified Good Hunting!!

Also, there's lots of agate to be found about 1 1/2 hours away near Rio grande City. If you don't mind checking out businesses in Brownsville that use gravel for landscaping, then the Super-8 motel by Shoney's restaurant has TONS of gravel!

Someone from that area said that the rail road beds were full of agates and pet wood. Most any rock with color is going to be an agate or jasper. Where the rail road crosses the highway would be a good place to start.
Most gravel pits will let you in to look for rocks. Take a squirt bottle of water. If there is alot of color it will be agate or jasper, most of the time. I have a small pile that ended up being junk...but I picked up a ton of good stuff that way.

payton... I know that's a disapointment to you, but maybe it was to hot for them to go and search? You may be able to find someone on here to gather a few for you and send them? I know when I get a chance to do my road trip I am going to do my best to pick up rocks where ever I go and stop.... hopefully before I die! lol
