Just wondering if anyone knows of some collecting areas in North Dakota?? I was also wondering if the sapphires along the Missouri river in Montana ever make it that far east into North Dakota? Thanks for the help.

Well, I would say my best luck at nice rock for tumbling, In the eastern side, would be the lower Sheyenne river, around the Lisbon area. Otherwise go to the western side of the state, Dickinson area to the north, has a lot of color in the rock, jasper, pet wood. Now I have heard from my step-daughter that around the cannonball river south of Dickinson is a great place, as well as the Killdeer mountains to the north.
I'm currently in Wahpeton,in the middle of the red river valley surrounded by nothing other than flat plains of black dirt. So, If I get the bug, to go rock hunting, its usually a long drive.
Hope this might help, Mike

Hey Gswilkent, The entire area, N, S, E & W, around Dickenson, for 25 miles+, is a great area. Look for the piles of rocks in the middle of the fields. Get permission first before entering private property. The landowners are usually very good at allowing one to rockhunt on their properts. Lots of petrified wood in the area. Years ago the landowners picked up the rocks and piled them up to get them out of the way. The piles are still where they put them. I have found the North Dakota farmers and ranchers very friendly and you just need to ask. Good Luck. Bob M. Check out my Fairburn Agate Collection at: www.angelfire.com/nb/rockman
