Will be traveling through northern Nebraska this fall on our way south for the winter. Would like to do some rock hounding in the area around Crawford and up into South Dakota. Want to find Blue Agates, Fairburn Agates, and Prairie Agates. Does anyone in the group have any information on the area, and hints on where and what to look for.
Will continue on west from there into Wyoming and will need additional info on points west.
Thanks
OM

Hi, and welcome to the rockhouse! If you search this message board for past "puppie96" posts, you'll find a bunch of stuff about places I've recently gone to. Considering I'm just a tourist we've covered a lot of ground in South Dakota and Wyoming. If you try searches on the state names, you'll get info from others too, but it would be too broad a topic for an effective search. Sorry, I have no info on Crawford, which sounds interesting and one that has just been lower on the priority list for one reason or another. Actually, I hadn't really thought about it, but I haven't hounded in Nebraska at all. A couple of times when doing gas stops we tried for spots right by the river (this is I-80) but we've never been able to get to the river -- private property. Of course, most of all go back through the posts right here, I know there are some about those areas.

OM, Check out www.angelfire.com/nb/rockman. That will give you some ideas on where to go, both around Crawford, and South Dakota. Have fun and I hope your rock bucket overflows!!!!!!!! Bob M.

Crawford has lots of Nat'l Grasslands close by. Or you can go to Toadstool Park lota fossils and agates west of Crawford are agates beds and a state park.A stop at the Park Service for a map is real helpfull. Many private land owners will let hunt if you ask. Most of these poeple are old lonely rock hunters.

Trip report - WE were in the Crawford area two days back, and have been driven out by the weather. Went out north of town and into the grassland. Any place where there is any wind or water erosion is good place to look. Was looking for Blue Agate and Fairburn Agate which were both supposed to be in the area, but found neither in the short time I had to look. did find a few nice pcs of reddis agate and red/white mixed. would have done better if had more time. I am a newbie at this, and know I missed treasures because I did not know what to look for.
Currently in Rawlins, Wy. waiting out the rain and snow. If it looks likt it will warm up we proceed west if not south into Colorado and UT
