Hey did anybody catch that new show on the Travel Channel called best places to find cash and treasures? They had a mine in SE Oregon that has Oregon Sunstones and its free! The lady that hosts the show found a red sunstone that was over 10 carats that looked nice after some jeweler cut it for her. The name of the mine is Spectrum mines, its about 27 miles NE of Plush OR. ( Also conveintly south of Glass Butte, where i plan'd on going next summer anyways ) Has anyone been out there before and have thier 2 cents to share about thier experience? *cough* Dale Sounds like a FUN place to go. - Eric

I saw the same program you did Eric! Great show! (but I missed the part that said it was free!) I thought for sure there'd be a per day dig fee.
It was a beaut she dug up too! Did you see they ended up selling it for $5500.00?
Oh Man...I really want to retire soon so I can go do fun things...

I know it sounds too good to be true, but I looked at the mines website and sure enough, its free... Now for 2-300$ you can get 1 hour of help and get to keep ALL that is found by the staff that help you out ( Useing heavy equipment also ). I think im gonna have to do an hour... Sounds like a blast!! Still waiting for a response from someone thats been there... I have a feeling that your chances of getting skunked are super high, but you never know. lol - Eric

I saw that show too - bookmarked the mine's web page just in case I get interested. I figure it's a great trip if you do your own faceting, but if you just mine and have to pay to have it "tricked out" into a sellable gem, you're gonna be out several hundred with no promise of selling it. It'd be fun, though

It sure got on my list of places to visit real fast. Boy..that was some show. Even if you don't find a gem like she did..it would still be worth a shot.....ya just never know when digging around in the dirt...

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the info. I didn't know of that mine and would love to see the show you seen it on...I have only been thru Mcdermitt twice, to and from AZ and hunted Antelope a few years back all over the South Oregon border until we finally tagged out. We found mega petrified wood just hunting. Lots of chips of Jaspers and Agates from Native Americans when they made points... I Talked to a fella in Lakeview and he told me about Hart Mountain...But we never got a chance to go there, always wanted to check it out. He said you just walk around and Sunstones are float, kinda like Topaz Mountain... I have a hand drawn map at an estate sale I bought years ago in The Dalles Or that all be is nothing but X's and Sunstones next to the X's all within a 15 mile radius of Plush Oregon. Now the Rockhounder that passed away, man I kid you not that sale had about 300 LBS of Sunstones!!! It was incredible, dozens of coffee cans full of schillers and wood crates stuffed to the max all a buck a Lb talk about a mad house lol.Imagine atleast 50 men women and kids all stuffed in his tiny rock shop!!! I got half a coffe can and a cigar box and checked out as the people were elbow to elbow and two guys were arguing over a chunk of Blue Biggs, and getting loud---Crazy!!! Anyway that map was in the cigar box and I plan to dig that out this Spring.(The map that is) I got sucha bad feelin its probably all claimed but wouldn't it be awesome if some of it wasn't??? Hell we could all go digging, I'm easy and just have fun getting to dig rocks and tell stories... Man I think I'll dig that map out this week-end lol....Thanks again about the Spectrum mine that is really cool!!! -Dale Rhode

It would be a blast if a bunch of us met down there sometime. The 'Best places to find cash and treasures' show is on the Travel Channel at 10PM on Tuesdays, and you can catch it again on Saturday at 5PM? Its funny cuz my wife watches it with me and this week they had a State park in Arkansas where you can dig for diamonds so now she wants to go there instead lol I checked out the Spectrum mines website and it sounded like they were haveing a dry spell on finds, then they had a update that they were back to finding about a kilo/cubic yard! It would be all worth the trip down for me if i just found 1 sunstone. ( wouldn't have to be worth anything to get me happy hehe ) Its pretty crazy how a "sale" can bring out the worst in ppl isn't it! I remember 2 years ago my wife and I went to a Costco close to Christmas time and grown men were going to blows in the parking lot BEFORE the store even opened up! LOL I guess i just don't get it... hahah -Eric

They would do well to get $10.00 a carat. Steve
