Hey, Is anyone from around the Sierra Vista area? I'm headed there on Tuesday and will be there for probably close to 3 weeks. I would love to hook up with some fellow rockhounds...anyone close to the area...or does anyone know of some good rockhounding areas? I'm really excited since I'll probably get to Tucson for the big show. Hope to hear from some of you! Steve

Ok Steve, I haven't been to these spots but they are mentioned in a well know guide for that area: At the intersection of Routes 92 and 90 in Sierra Vista, head south down 92 for 12.1 miles. Make a right at Ash Canyon Rd and drive 2.1 miles to a campground area that will be to the left. There should be an open gate along the fence. the wash below is the place to hunt for quartz crystals that are supposed to be the clearest, brightest and most well formed in the state. Check out boulders in the wash for crystallization.. bring a sledge and googles. It's hard work but supposedly well worth the effort. There is also gold and calcite in the area, and some placer claims, so watch for the markers.. don't hunt there without permission. The guide hints at other treasures waiting to be discovered up the brushy canyon. Another site is off of Route 92 from Sierra Vista heading toward the Bisbee Junction. At the Naco Highway turn south towards Mexico. Drive 4.6 miles to the railroad tracks and make a left on South Alvarez Road. at .3 miles there should be a corral to your left and a "Berlin Wall" style barrier right in front of you. Make a left and go for 3.4 miles along the border to some hills to the east. The guide advises you to stop and talk to any border patrols you might see to let them know what you're doing. The hills contain marine fossils and pet wood. Watch for private property postings. As you approah the hills, the road will bear north and then to the east again in a low pass between them, which is where you should park. The hillside to your north contains the fossils. On the top of the ridge to the south is where you'll find red pet wood protruding from the gray limestone. It's very close to the border of Mexico so take care! Hope this helps.
