Anyone ever heard of this place? I might just have to go see this for myself. hkentcraig.com/GarnetHill.htmlMy husband told me to pick a spot for a weekend get away. Now I just have to convince him that Rahleigh is a really romantic place. I wonder what the legalities are for collecting in the public right of way? I can just see me picking garnets out of the hill and the police pull up wondering if I've lost my mind. Lori

If you are serious about going, this is what I would do. Call the Sheriffs office in that county and ask. They will probably know the area you are talking about, and make sure to jot down the deputies name, don't come right out and ask for it but if it is not given when he/she answers the phone be discreet but get it. If you ask at the end of your inquiry chances are you will get hold on please and be transfered to the county atty office, and in 6 months or so you will get a answer.
That way if you are told it is ok and you are contacted at the site you can say Deputy so and so told me it was alright.
Right of way laws are different from state to state for instance in Ks. a land holder owns to the middle of a waterway. But I am seeing here that in Tx. they own to the highest watermark?
This advise comes from 14 years law Enforcement exp. If the Deputy was wrong the worst you would get would be sent on your way.

I might get to go in a couple weeks. The sheriffs department had no clue and I think they may have suspected I was a little deranged. They didn't know of any reason I couldn't pick up some garnets as long as I'm not littering, not vandalizing anything and I'm not creating a disturbance or a road hazard. As long as I leave no evidence I was ever there they'll pretend I'm not there too. Sounds good to me.
I found another reference to Garnet Hill with pics on a radioactive mineral collecting website. There's uranium ore in the same seam of mica as the garnets. That's pretty freaky considering right on the other side of the ridge there's a house sitting on it. I wonder if the home owner knows?
