Now that I've got you all excited by the title of this thread, let me apologise for bursting your bubble. This speacial place is in the land of Oz. (Don't think flying monkeys, ruby slippers and munchkins. Think kangaroos, dunnies and the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.) A little to far for most of you to travel for a day of rock hunting.
I went out on Saturday to a property in the town (not that there was any town to speak of) called Windera. Just over 3 hours NNW of Brisbane. $3(AUD) to fossick all day and take as much as you want.
I had picks and spades and was ready to go.
I never dug a single hole. I didn't need to.
There were agates and agate pieces everywhere. Red, orange, yellow, blue, purple, white. It was unbelievable. I came home with buckets full of the stuff. No really big agates but I don't own a saw so that's no problem. But plenty of stuff for tumbling.
It was pretty hot and clear that day and even though I slopped on the SPF30+, all that bending over all day meant I ended up being badly burnt on the back of my ears. I also got what I wil call "Fossickers burn". T-shirt goes up a bit, shorts go down a bit and the top of your butt ends up toasted. (throughout the day, the 3 teenage guys I took with me kept saying..."Hey Mike...say 'no' to crack", "Anyone got a coin I can put in that coin slot")
Anyway, I'll try to get some photos up. (Of the agates that is. Not of my...special burn)
If you're ever in SE Queensland, let me know and we'll get you out to Windera for a day!
