wm7734, The following web address is in reference to camping in the Grasslands. Sounds like no problem. I have been checking the camping regulations for the Black Hills proper but cannot find any thing. You may want to try the Railroad Butte area, 15 miles east of Rapid City. Sixty% of my Fairburns come from that area. If you need more info, do not hesitate to EMail, desire@rushmore.com. Hope you have a great time. Bob M. gorp.away.com/gorp/resource/us_national_forest/sd_buffa.htmHiking and camping are permitted on the Grasslands. Since there are no established Grassland trails for hiking, you may either follow a two track road or go cross country. The Indian Creek, located west of Scenic, SD is a roadless area that offers a wilderness experience. You may camp anywhere on the Grassland, but remember it will be a primitive camp. You will need to bring everything with you and take everything back With you. When hiking or camping, you should take your own water supply. Camp fires must be carefully attended, a grass fire can start in seconds and spread rapidly because of the wind.

I realize Nebraska is not on your itinerary, but if you happen to be traveling I-80 on your trip, check out the petrified wood gallery in Ogallala, NE: www.petrifiedwoodgallery.com/It's amazing! Or, in the very NW corner of Nebraska, just a teensy detour between Wyoming and SD, the Agate Fossil Beds near Harrison, NE. www.us-parks.com/agate_fossil/index.htmlThey do have camping facilities, and some nice B&Bs. Apparently, local landowners do allow rockhunting with permission. You would have to do a little research, but it could be fun. Or, if you are in the Hulett, WY, area, check out Devil's Tower. www.devilstowerkoa.com/Hope you have a great trip!

Heey, this is rather creepy- I am going the exact same areas on my sort-of vacation. Essentially I'm moving from Washington to Minnesota and kinda meandering to do rockhunting along the way. First of, some good books: Rockhounding Montana Rockhounding Wyoming I'm waiting for the books to come in (updates when I get them) but one place that I found already that comes to mind is Crystal Park, Montana. Basically its a huge quartz crystal site that is specifically for the public. No back roads, and worrying about trespassing here! It has a website www.fs.fed.us/geology/crystal_park.html but more information (and pictures) are available if you just google it. Apparently the black hills and badlands of South Dakota are like ..rockhound mecca (so says this article anyways : www.blackhillsbadlands.com/go.asp?ID=238). So, since I'm doing lots of backbreaking research in this area I'll update you =) Oh, oh one more book: Midwest Gem Fossil and Mineral Trails : Prairie States P.S. Um, if it is in your trip plans I suggest you go see the glacier while they still exist. Also, Glacier National Park has camping. Update #2: Surface collecting only is permitted in the Black Hills National Forest - and they have lots of camping and other activities.

I went to Montana last summer, and there was a place south of Alder called Ruby Reservoir. There are calcite, opalite and garnets. According to this website there is camping. goldwest.visitmt.com/listings/899.htm
