Anyone know of public places to rock hunt in the piedmont area of NC? Or perhaps Virginia, Martinsville area?
I live in the foothills of Rockingham County, NC. Lots of quartz in my immediate area, not much else... Nice stuff but want something different..
Anyone from around this area?
Happy Hunting!

Hello there. Well, I am in the Raleigh area, and honestly I haven't found many places that have anything other than that wonderful white-ish quartz. In this area though, I usually try to make it a point to browse any time I see a rock bed around a building, or any time I see where workers have dug fairly deep into the ground. I haven't found anything spectacular, but occasionally I'll find some nice looking stuff. The rocks beds around buildings and parking lots around here are pretty good. Most of these places have the rock hauled in from other areas, so you can find some nice variety. There are some pay to hunt places a little farther west, and a couple of rock clubs in the area, you may check with them. Good luck.

Thanks!
Good tips on construction sites... I know there are lots of "pay by the bucket" places up toward the mountains... looking for a nice nature field trip sort of thing..
Thanks much!

I'm in the Archdale area of N.C. I'm so new at this my used ebay tumbler hasn't arrived as yet and I just concluded by research you can tumble any rock. I think I'm going to enjoy this.
