the "really" good stuff is yellow and has a metal tint ! ;D ;D but alot is silver and lead too ------- look for the white quartz with yellow lines in it --- and don't tell anyone where you found it ;D--- should be able to find some petwood , pyrite ( all over) jaspers, and some agate ---- but lots and lots of granite too ---

check with your library and see if they have a copy of the film " treasure of the sirrea madas" ( misspelled ) --- it is the story of how and when they found it --- it is all closed now but some nice pieces are shown in the film ! also tells where it's at ,etc.

We were hoping for a cabin as my mom just can't do the camping thing, her back..... My aunt is checking on some motels close by and is reeeealllly wanting my mom to come and see her and ....pour little ole me will have to drive her out there! Sandy

Spoil yourself stay at the Double Tree. It is the best stay in town. You must ride the train also if you have time. Also go west to Mesa Verde Indian ruins. My brother lives close to Durange and also says to look for all the old mines from Silverton to Ouray.

For agate and jasper try going up wolf creek pass...about 3/4 way up is a pull out. Some agate and jasper on the hill side. Heard there were geodes in this area but didn't find any.
Go over the top and half way down you will find where they just dug a tunnel through the mountain. Should find some keepers along the road. Also along the edge of the creek.
Walking down is easy, getting back up from the creek is an adventure if you are not used to altitude.

I know mom is going to do the train with her sister. And it sounds like we are going to do some white water rafting. It's always been mom's dream to try that. Shes in her early 70s, so she thinks she will chicken out. I will be rock hunting and sight seeing. I lived in Colo Springs for a few years and drove everywhere. I have been to the Mesa Verde, but may very well go again. Thank you Jeff for the Wolf creek information!

If your mom has a bad back you must take her to the mineral hot springs in Pagosa Springs. The place is amazing right on the river and on the way to wolf creek pass. A few miles up the pass is treasure falls. A big waterfall you have to hike a little to it but it is nice. There should be some good rocks on the trail....

First week of June is when it looks like we are going. I think her sister has tons of things planned for her. I'll be out wandering and looking for rocks! So will be writing lots of things down on all this. Wolf Creek pass sounds great and treasure falls. I love Colorado, miss it!

Looks like we are for sure going. I'm looking at maps and such. We will actually go this month. Also, I need to figure out the route I'll be taking, will be asking if there are any rockhounding places along the way. If there are any rockhounds in the Durango area, I'd love to have some company! My mom isn't into rocks that much!
