ON our trip to colorado in a few weeks, we will be going through oklahoma on 40, then through Texas (Amarillo) then into New Mexico. So far it looks like we'll go through on 40 on the way there. May go a bit further north or 40 on the way back as I've found some scenic routes. Anything neat in those areas as for scenery or rocks??? Thanks for all the help! If anyone lives in NM around our routes or around Durango, I would loooooooove to have a rockhunting partner or even just meet some RTH members! Sandy

Hi Sandy. Last time I was through there, I stayed at Santa Rosa in a campground. It's a pretty barren area. I spent a day and drove down to Roswell, where the aliens live, and then over to Lincoln, where Billy the Kid lived (another alien). That route also picks up Fort Sumter where Billy the Kid was killed (murdered?). Saw rattlesnakes, tarantulas, Antelope, and markers where men died under Billy's gun. Wasn't in to rocks when I was there, so I can't help with that. Been to any of the Jesse James sites in Missouri? I've probably been to most all of them. I seem to have this fascination with bank robbers. Maybe cause I'm a frustrated bank robber myself. bd

Sorry NM, I thought I had posted all of it. Will go from 40 to Albuquerque (from Amarillo), then up to Durango. On the way back, not sure, but may take a different route that stays more along near the NM/CO border back into Texas. BD, I live near St. James, tons of Jesse James places all around. When my parents moved here in 86, we looked at one house for sale that was one of James' hideouts, it's listed on some historical things.

Go to page four and look at Abiquiui lake. It is north of Santa fe and south of Chama.
Tons of agate in that area.

Yes, When you get to the big I in Albuquerque get off I 40 and go north on I 25 to Santa Fe. About 7 miles north of Albuquerque, look for piles of 2 - 4 inch round rocks on the side of the freeway. It is around Bernalillo. Be careful it is a busy freeway. Go north to Santa Fe then take hwy 285 north towared Espanola. Look for the signs that say Chama or Abiquiui. At the dam go toward the town of Galina or Coyote. A few miles past the dam you will see rocks off the road. Just look around to find the Agate. Get back on hwy 84 north to Chama. In Chama you will turn left on a road to Pagosa Springs. Stop and relax at the mineal hot springs in town. Say hi to my brother he lives there Lol.. Go west to Durango. BTW Another road to get to Durango is take Hwy 550 west in Bernalillo to Bloomfield Then north to Durango. They both are great drives but if you have not been by Santa Fe it is a must. If you do go thru Santa Fe you can take 285 north from clines corners on I 40 north and save some time. Check the map.. Have fun and be carefull.

Thank you so much Jeff and NM! I like the route you gave. Was going to take the 550, but I think you're route up, then maybe a different one on the way back. We were going to take my truck, but now I think we are going to take my moms s10 blazer, not as much room. I may have to bring some flat rate boxes with me!!!!!!!

Hey there, Oklahoma does not have much in the way of rock hounding....mainly sandstone here...you really have to know where to go to get anything worth tumbling here and get lucky in mall parking lots...ha ha ha.
Good luck on your trip and have fun. Steve & Betty

Thanks Steve & Betty! I had been reading and it didn't sound like much in OK. We are going to get as far as we can on Tuesday, then spend the night. That way Wednesday we can take our time rockhounding and sight seeing on the way up to Durango. I remember when I lived in Colo Springs, I'd take 70 through Kansas.......I hated driving through Kansas......... I'm hoping Oklahoma will offer a little bit different scenery! Sandy
