We're (wife, 2 x 13 year old girls) are going to AZ for vacation later this year. My first time in AZ with time to rock hunt ! We're staying in Sedona most of the time and I am sure there are some great places to get rocks round there - can anyone help us ? The wife is a rockhound too, but the kids, well, they're all iPod and attitude so we may just have to leave them in the car :-) thanks Andrew

I have never hounded around Sedona Andrew, but Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cottonwood & Jerome is very close Sedona. All have rocks to be found around the Verde Valley. A trip upto Jerome is alays worth it if you are near by. Such a cool little town.

Leave the windows down and leave the kids some water LOL. Hope you find some great stuff and please make sure to post pics of your finds.

Thanks for the locations ! We'll go there for sure. Will post pix... I guess we shouldn't leave the kids in the car...maybe exile them to the hotel swimming pool.... Andrew

There's rock clubs in Cottonwood and Sedona you may want to contact for some help. Let us know how it goes. I'll be visiting Cottonwood eventually (probably in November to coincide with the rock trip). Steve

If you want to take State Route 179 and head south towards I-17, just before you get to I-17 2 or 3 miles before....Pull off anywhere you can find a spot and hunt on the west side of the road. There is all kinds of neat stuff and the closer you get to the river bottom, the better the rocks get. Tuzigoot National Monument is close by Sedona and very much worth seeing and so is Montezuma's Castle, (cliff dwellings). I haven't been up that way since the fire last year, I know a lot of the forest up and around Slide Rock area was burned but I'm not sure about the areas South of Sedona. If your up for a short road trip, continue on State Route 179 until you cross underneath I-17. The first place you come to if you stay on that road, would be Beaver Creek, (cool spot), once you pass that the road will turn to dirt...... Drive for about 3 or 4 miles and park anywhere you can. There is a lot of cool agates and jaspers in that whole area.
I will post a map if I can get it to upload.

Yep, Beaver Creek is a must see. You might also want to take the short walk to V-V Ranch near Beaver Creek. There is an amazing spot with Pictographs all over the rock wall. (I'll post some pics when I get back from work) and the creek along 179 is great for Jasper and Agate, like Jamie said. Great views there too. (great views everywhere!) The fire stayed to the north, around the trout farm and Slide Rock. It went down the canyon and straight back up, east to west. Didn't burn so close to Slide Rock that it took out the trees in that vicinity so the area remains just as picturesque.
