Will be in Prineville area latter part of next week and wondered if anyone had locations in that area for rocks? Will have about a day and half to spend in that area before I head for Glass Butte for obsidian.
Thanks yogibear Bill

Yogi: If things haven't changed, the Chamber of Commerce in Prineville has a rockhound site map available. I think it used to even be free but they may charge for it now. Checked and they do charge as it's now a US Forest Service map "Central Oregon Rockhound Map" Price $2.50 Available from the Prineville-Crook County Chamber of Commerce, 390 Fairview, Prineville, Oregon 97754. They also have a complete rockhound vacation packet which contains the map and other info for $6.50. I believe they have a website if you want to order via phone or computer ...mel

I had a good day at Richardson's Ranch (150 lbs. of Thundereggs) plus some Jasper and misc. other rocks. Went to 2 locations from the Chamber of commerce map ( courtesy of the Motel that i stayed in) and Glass Buttte for Obsidian. Lots of Obsidian there but you have to look for the bigger pieces, if all you want is small pieces then stop you vehicle when you see the ground shining and pick up as much as you want from the side of the road (more like a trail then road).

Glad that the Rock Ranch worked out for you. I plan on going again later this year.

I was able to find black and mohogany and straight black in pieces up to about 10 lbs. Lots of small 2 to 6 inch by 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches thick. Lots of tumbling size if you want that and then also all the small pieces that you want. If you go out into the sagebrush I am sure that you can find just about any size you want. Do pick up the map from the Chamber of Commerce because it shows all the different colors and their locations. To get to some of the areas you will deffinately want 4WD vehicle or Quadra track vehicle. Lots off places that have been used for overnight stops in the area. I saw no signs about no overnight camping.

I was up in Oregon and got the rockhounding map in Prineville. I tried to take Main Street/ Hwy. 27 to Hwy. 20 which would lead to Glass Butte. Unfortunately the Prineville map doesn't show that the last 15 miles of Hwy. 27 is gravel (I did find it later on a different map marked as gravel), and I was in a small rental car, so I turned around rather than getting the rental car dinged up. If I had been paying closer attention to the map, I would have just parked and walked the extra mile or two to Fisher Canyon. Has anyone been out to Fisher Canyon??? The Prineville map says you definitely need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get to the Glass Butte sites with Gold/Fire Sheen obsidian, or Green/Grey Banded or Midnight Lace/Mahogany. Those places are about 3 miles or so off Hwy. 20. But I wondered if anyone who has been to Glass Butte has been lucky just picking up some of these more unusual obsidians just off Hwy. 20? Earlier that day, I had driven out of Prineville towards the North Ochoco Resevoir dig site but there were three gravel roads I could have turned left on to get to the site... two were marked private, one had a gate that was closed and locked So I got skunked there, too. Has anyone been to the Ochoco Resevoir site for rockhounding? Was there a gate (open) when you went or did you take the "private" road??? smadelinker
