Yep, I'm headed to Bozeman for a few weeks or longer. Work calls...so...does anyone know of any locations to rockhound near Bozeman? I know it is by the Yellowstone River, but am not sure if it's close to any good locations. If anyone knows any areas, please respond to the thread. Thanks a bunch. I'm leaving Monday for the week, than possibly headed back after Memorial Day. Steve

Hey Steve, I grew up there and my brother and parents live there.
The Yellowstone River is about 30 miles east of Bozeman, and the good agate bearing gravel bars are another 200-300 miles downriver, but the Gallatin and Madison rivers have some interesting stuff in their gravel bars, However- the rivers are probably running pretty high atthis time of year... Also, there is still quite a bit of snow still left in the mountains so a lot of my favorite places aren't yet accessible. If you get some free time you should take a drive up Hyalite Canyon to the reservoir for sure (Head out of town on S 19th until it sweeps right at the base of the mountains, then in a little less than a mile turn left on the National Forest Access road).
In the warmer months, the peaks of the Gallatin Range up beyond the lake there are a good place to find Hyalite Opal (a common botryodial {sp?} clear glassy formation encrusting rhyolite and basalt scree) and there are pockets of agate and stuff up there too.
Just a block south of Main Street on Wilson there's a rock shop run by some nice ladies called Earth's Treasures, they often have some good inexpensive rough in their agate buckets.
I still have tons of friends there too, its a pretty fun town, I hope you have a good time up there.
-Pete

Cool Pete! I will definitely write that info down. At least, I can hit a rock shop there. I'm sure the rivers are still running too high, but it's worth checking them out. We may be going back down again after this initial feirst trip, and the next time down, may be for a month or so. Thanks again Pete. Steve

Hey Steve! I envy you, that`s my dream place to live {Madison Valley],I`ve done quite a bit of reading and surfing the net about the area. There are a few old mine tailings you might check out but you need a 4x4to get to the good ones.Good luck on your trip......................Rocky

You're going up to that part of the country and thinking 'bout rocks??? How 'bout a fishin' pole?
Stay safe up there and when you get back, let's go find some new territory down in Central Utah.

I was up there this last week, on Monday I took a little trip out south of town into the mountains, near the end of the road I came across this interesting outcropping which had evidence of having being picked on by rockhounds; The ground was littered with leftover pieces of nice looking flint/jasper Looking closer one finds some very interesting colors with reds, yellows, greens and even some clear mixed in; As an added bonus, the road getting there runs along some prime fishing streams.

I'm afraid I'd be tempted to haul the whole outcrop away, that's nice stuff!
