As you probably already know, the park is strictly off limits for rockhounding, which is too bad as there are a lot of interesting geologic areas in the park.
If you pass through the north entrance in Gardiner MT you are only a short distance from Tom Miner Basin and the Gallatin Petrified Forest, where collecting is allowed, but only under very strict regulations and limits.
Lots of interesting stuff to see, but unfortunately not a lot of freedom when it comes to rock collecting in that part of the state(s).
Although I have to expect there is a lot of stuff to look for between Casper and the park, but me being a Montana boy at heart, I don't know what sort of treasures you have to look for in Wyoming ...

I've picked up pet wood and other rocks from the rivers right outside the park, but as noted above, I was violating Montana regs, evidently. There is a lot of stuff I've read about searching for Montana agate & sapphires in the Yell tributories. Montana agate turns up fairly frequently. I have stopped at the places where you can access the Yell river on the road in from Livingston, but haven't found much. There are a whole lot of places listed on the route through Cody, and some threads on this board with trip reports. I've never had enough stop time to check them out, but read the Rockhounding Wyoming book and generate ideas -- what can I say?

Ms Cina: Linda (my wife) and I went to Yellowstone in June of 1975. We stayed in a campground just north of Cody, along a river that runs along the campground. At the time there was a good size gravel and small boulder field. We found some jade but mostly found bloodstone. I think the river forms from the resevoir and flows past the road to Yellowstone just on the outskirts of Cody and also crosses again the road that leads north out of Cody. It maybe a place to check if you have time. Take Care!! Still Diggin in Dirt, GaRock (Frank)
