For the past several months I've been collecting in Picacho Hills, NM, west of Las Cruces. I see lots of rhyolite, agate, jasper, obsidian, pet wood and other cool things. To get to the undeveloped part drive into the subdivision off of highway 70 west of town and stay to the left when the road splits and go toward Barcelona Ridge. Keep driving until you get to a sign for Coronado Ridge on your right and turn rignt. Keep driving until you get to the undeveloped part. Get out and start looking in the float on the hills - you WILL find interesting rocks - promise. Have fun and say hi if you see me. ;D

I can attest to the happy hunting maryann is talking about. There's some really nice rocks to be found there. You must have 500lbs of rocks by now maryann!

Ed - I have a 'rock garden' on my back patio and my goal is rival Susan's rock garden (NMRocks)! I worry that Picacho Hills will be all developed soon so I collect as much as I can as often as I can with no thought of leaving some for others since the area will be essentially out of bounds soon. Ed, where we collected is all bull dozed over now. Sigh. I go so often that the management has stopped to say hi to me and he gave me a card and offered to show me how to get to the trailhead at Mt Picacho itself. Can't wait!
