Hubby and I are going to be taking a trip to Vegas. Are there any good hounding areas right in the general area?
Thanks,
Shannon

I bought Rockhounding Nevada a few years back and there are 2 or 3 spots nearby. I'll try and dig up the book after I get back from work.

It really depends if you're looking for something specific, or if you're looking for anything you may stumble-across. If the latter is the case, just head-off to any mountain, and take just about any dirt road that leads you in. It's common to find many beautiful minerals just laying on the ground, such as quartz, marble, jasper, agate, zoisite, et cetera, depending which area you're in.
If you're looking for specific minerals, then you'll have to do a bit of homework first, to find-out where they may be found. Even then, you may have some difficulty finding some of the more sought-after minerals, as some of the locations which used to have them may have been already hit hard by other rockhounds. This is quite common.
Once you're here, if you don't mind doing a bit of driving, and possibly an overnight stay, the entire area between Tonopah and Reno is rockhounders' paradise. You may even be able to pre-arrange a bit of mining in a turquoise mine with an owner of one of the small mines (they're almost all very small mines).
If you intend to hunt for something specific while you're in Vegas, post it here and perhaps I'll know where you're likely to find it. There's also good rockhounding in near-by Utah.
