I'm new to this wonderful site but not new to rock hounding. It has turned into a wonderful family activity for me and my children and we seldom go anywhere that we're not looking down rather than ahead! We found incredible agate specimens in Oregon this summer of various types. I'm hoping to have some polished specimens to post to the site and will take both "before" and "after" photos. James mentioned that he was looking for red agate. Richardson Ranch in Oregon might be a good choice!

Where did you find your agate at?? I know this winter, you should try hunting Fall Creek reservoir once it's drained. It's just outside of Springfield....near Lowell. I have found some really nice banded pieces. Of course, along the coast is good to. Florence area and Yachats. Steve

I started out bagging and labeling my collections over the summer. The kids' just got thrown in bags with their names. Now, mine are all kind of tumbled together so that I could fill the tumbler with similar surfaces and hardness levels. We collected in Washington east of Mt. St. Helen's (Lewis & Cispus Rivers) but didn't get much. I did get the banded rock I'll post. Inland in Oregon we made several trips to the McKenzie, Calapooia, and Blue Rivers. I did manage to find several Holley Blues! Of course, my children fully enjoyed watching me fall repeatedly on my butt in the rivers. We went to a nice rock show in Sisters, and then headed more for coastal areas. My ex-husband was along and I admire his patience with the three of us. Vacation means rock hounding for us whereas his ideas aren't quite the same. However, we found many, many wonderful rocks all along the coast of Oregon from Waldport south to Crescent City, CA. I wish we didn't live so far away (Florida) because it's just too far to drive and pull my trailer. FedEx Ground rock shipping gets very expensive ($150 this trip!)

Nope - I think I'll just leave them in there with their rocks!

The greatest success we had in Oregon/N. California was in four locations: Crescent Beach, beaches near Waldport, Calapooia River near Sweet Home, and of course thunder eggs at Richardson Ranch. I wish I'd scheduled more than one day at the ranch, even in the heat. I also wish I'd had a sledge hammer and crow bar with me, though. Rock hammers/picks just weren't enough to do the job.

You know, I searched and searched the Calapooia river at various places, clear up to the timber company land. I found a few little tiny samples, but never anything big enough to tumble! I found a few tiny pieces of blue agate in a matrix rock, near enough to Holley, but again not enough to do more than look at. Maybe I should try again. Tillamook, Lincoln, and Lane county beaches always get my bucket full though

I'll have to mark that on my map. I'm really hoping to go back next summer but take my little utility trailer with me. This shipping rocks gets REAL expensive. It would be fun to have a RTH get together in Oregon next summer!!!

Try beaches North of Newport (one of which is Agate Beach) up to Lincoln City. Winter is best but I was looking along with others this Summer and they found two on the beach about as big as grapefruit.
