Can anyone recommend rock hunting locations near Young Harris GA? I'll be there in October and have a free afternoon on Wednesday the 24th. I remember seeing "Travel Channel Becky" in SC or GA finding Amethyst or Aquamarines in that area (or am I just high on life?) at a fee pay mine. Of course any location with plentiful rock for tumbling or cabbing would probably do just fine.

You can go to lake Chatuge and hunt the gravel bars for Sapphires and Rubys. Check out the MAGMA past Field trip reports for the lake and you can get some ideas. www.wncrocks.com/magma/magma.htmKeith

i think what you seen was the jxr amethyst site......(jackson crossroads)...i beleive it has been shut down though....there are at least a few mines near by...not sure if they are salted or not....1 i beleive offered a go dig in the mountain kind of thing....very near where you are going. be sure to slide into the town of helen....not sure if its going into helen or leaving helen from where you are....but at 1 end of the town... someone had a big display of rock on the side of the road...right at the end of town. i like to have broke my neck looking back...but the female was driving....and wanted to get home...wouldnt turn around ...i did manage to see big peices of rose quartz...while looking back ;D. maybe garock will be along....to help a little more....kev.

Hi Mark - I'm afraid Lake Chatuge is not going to be low enough to fine any #9. The past two years they have not lowered the lake level enough to gain access to the old mine areas. However!!! Just up the road is Chunky Gal Mt. and Buck Creek!! In the WNCRocks site (above) look up Buck Creek. You can find ample specimens of Almandine Garnet up at Deep Gap road, follow it about 1 1/2 miles where creek crosses road and folks camp. That is little buck that runs into buck ck. Bottom is full of garnet. Chunky Gal is plenty well picked over, but still opportunity for finding specimens of pink corundum in the green rock up there. The folks at Young Harris should be able to provide you with more info as to locations etc. Happy huntin' - daddydave ;D
