My wife and I will be in Holbrook AZ pretty soon (at the end of the AZ rock trip actually), and was wondering if anyone knew of any good collecting sites that are both easily accessable and do not pose a problem with the tribes nearby. My wife's vision isn't the best so we can't go wandering off into the countryside. Something close by a road would be preferable, and not to far away from anything. Also, we want to be sensitive to the tribes of the area and don't want to go where we would offend anyone. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve

I self guided on several AZ trips. You should get both of the AZ rockhounding books. They give a lot of suggestions for the area. I went to the area south of Woodruff, which is south of Holbrook. This trip has been described by myself and others on this board -- in fact I got really great directions from one of our board members. I drove a distance out into the desert on an unpaved but well graded road. However, there are other places to look closer to the town of Woodruff. People from the area can give you good info if they see this post. I LOVED that trip!!!

Hi Steve!
First off you will be right next to Petrified Forest National Park. As a rockhound, missing that would be next to sinful! There are some cool rock shops there as well as in downtown Holbrook.
There is petrified wood to be found south of the village of Woodruff. Take Hwy. 77 (starts in Holbrook) south and hang a left on Woodruff Ave. after a few miles. Go through Woodruff to the "T" and turn right. This road turns into dirt and eventually ends up at the town of Snowflake. For 20 miles on this stretch of road there is pet wood. There is some along the road but as always, these are the most picked through spots, but you will find some. You will be well south of the Navajo Nation and Petrified Forest N.P. and unless otherwise marked, this land is your land and collecting is perfectly legal.
I think Condor made this trip too with a day or two stay?

I have also been north of Holbrook and found some pet wood there too. It wasn't as colorful as the stuff to the south and I think I was getting close to the Rez line where collecting is a no-no without a permit from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Thanks guys. That really helps. I think I'll get the full low down at the AZ trip. It looks like our best bet is south of Woodruff, just beause it's right by the road. I'm looking for the easiest possible collecting, not necessarily the spots with the best wood. My wife's eyesight isn't the best so by the road is a big plus. Thanks again for all your help Steve

I've worked the roadsides along the roads around Woodruff and towards Snowflake too. Been years ago but the hunting was actually pretty good, especially for small pieces of rainbow wood.....Mel

I took the road south of Woodruff and followed several sets of directions that took me to a windmill where I hung a left, as I recall. Continuing down a bit I passed some structures on the left -- didn't see any people though -- then came to an area where there are small hills or buttes. I parked along the road in several different places and walked around -- pretty easy except going up the hills, which weren't terrible. I was finding stuff EVERYWHERE, especially on the sides and towards the top of the hill. It was very easy collecting. Just make sure to take a lot of water and not to overdo it in the heat -- it's deceptive and you get dehydrated must faster than you expect. I pushed myself too hard and didn't really realize it until I was already pretty messed up.

Holbrook is also the site of a meteorite strewnfield. Ever since 1912 people have been keeping thier eyes open for dark brownish and blackish looking rocks that are attracted to a magnet. The're worth a pretty penny per gram.
Most people use a metal detector or a meteorite stick (which is nothing more then a magnet at the end of a walking stick) to find them. Beware though- there's lots of iron to be found also.

Another location for pet. wood is at the Joesph City exit west of Holbrook. Take the exit, turn left towards the gas station then take the first right heading towards the power lines. At the power lines turn left up the dirt road, if you don't have 4 wheel drive, don't venture or you can get stuck in the sand. There is a lot of pet wood and jasper near the third power pole. Word of caution, you are only allowed 25 pounds per person.
