Hi I was just wondering if anyone knows of any public access spots to collect around Las Vegas? I am probably going down in February. I am pretty new to this so basically if it's a crystal, shiny or can be tumbled I'm happy. Something you can get near to in a rental car would be good. I have Gem Trails of Nevada coming but some personal experience would be great.

I'm in Pahrump, which is about 50 miles west of Vegas, right on the California border. I do 99% of my rockhounding right here in Pahrump.
Are there specific rocks you're after? A lot of people think they can readily go out and get some Turquoise here in Nevada. That's just not going to happen unless you jump someone's claim, and that's not cool. Even then, most of the Turq mines in Nevada are old and almost entirely depleted. If you went to one of the old mines, chances are that you wouldn't find anything.
If you'll be in Vegas, you may want to consider hounding in Utah. A lot of people on this forum have found a wide variety of good stuff there.

Well I'm not too picky if it has crystal or can be tumbled I'm happy. Living/rock collecting in southern Saskatchewan kind of lowers your expectations. About all I can find around here are some Montana type agates and a bit of jasper and all of that has been ground down to small rocks by glaciers and countless winters. I usually get excited if I find a agate that has any stripes at all and is bigger than a golf ball.
So with that in mind, is there anywhere that fits that description? Utah would be fine too, it looks to be only 1.5 hrs or so away. Where in particular did you have in mind? Also if you would be willing to share some spots around Pahrump that would be great too (I could bring some of those fabulous Saskatchewan Rocks I had mentioned)

If a few hours of travel are a feasible option, you might also check out Arizona, our Burro creek field trip was very productive!

Honestly, you'd do better in Utah or Arizona, because the rockhounding in those states is much better documented, and you'll know what you're looking for. It seems like people are more secretive and protective of their finds in Nevada, as I am with my mine. There are a lot of miners and rockhounds here, and a lot of them don't care about jumping claims, respecting others' finds, or respecting nature. Believe me, if news of the location of my mine got out, it would be invaded by scumbags with dynamite, ATVs, and dump trucks until they bled the place dry. Sad but true.
