I just recently joined the local rock club, at my first meeting a field trip was announced and planned. I was one of the first to ask to go. It was to an "opal pit" near Artesia, NM. The leader called it "Ogalala Opal" Not "precious opal", but what the hey, I would get out, hunt rocks and maybe make some new friends. ;D And I did all three! This material is mostly white, some other pastel colors and is in a dark matrix (dolomite I was told). There was about 10 of us and spent about 3 hours hounding. I brought home lots of opal! (2 buckets full (3 - 3 1/2 gallon size)), a few small agates, and a piece of kaliche. The kaliche I was told was the cabbing kind by our local expert . Some of my new friend said they would take me to collect alabaster and "Pecos Diamonds" I am anxiously awaiting the chance to cut what I found and go hunting again. Our club has lots of field trips in the early spring and summer, here that is in just a few months. ;D The seasons here are: almost summer, summer, still summer, and Christmas. ;D Thanks for reading Garry

Well Gary, kiss your life goodbye. From now on all you'll be able to do is think, eat and sleep rocks. Hope you're not married or if so, she's a hound too. ;D

Well shoot! I knew I needed to hook up with local rockhounds while I was down there. I went looking for Pecod "diamonds" in Artesia once, but came up empty handed. I didn't know about the opal there!
Supposedly there's a turquoise mine in the area as well. I was never able to get a more exact fix than "in the area" though.
Sands - Artesia is about 45 min. south of Roswell, and about 30 min. north of Carlsbad, right next to the Pecos River.
