I'm trying to decide whether to spend the summer in the Colorado mountains or back along the Washington/Oregon beaches. Several years ago I found rock hounding in Colorado to be very frustrating. Too many "no trespassing signs" and no way to get permission to enter without being a member of local rock clubs on their limited field trips. Books are out dated. Can anyone offer any suggestions where I can: take my kids to pan for gold, find good specimens for cutting and tumbling, maybe even find some small amounts of precious metals? I'd die and go to heaven if I could find some rhodocrosite but the primary source was closed down years ago due to dangerous conditions. I'm daring but don't want to risk taking my kids into any dangerous sites of which there are many in Colorado. Hey "homies" can you help me?

Hey bouldergal , I use to live in Colorado , in a little place called Midway ,, its down on rte 25 exit 11 south of Colorado springs and north of Pueblo , I found a number of meteorite pieces, some turquoise , lots of fossils, ... ect most of the land is open ranch so you shouldnt have any trouble doing a walkabout . if fact I really miss the area. I just wish I had found this site when I was living there I'm sure I would have had much better luck id'ing what was there. I guess the old proverb " if I only knew then ,what I know now " fits lol dang I wisih I could get back there .
Good luck

Thanks for the tip. I have a map that I mark locations on just for rock hunting! I just have a hard time believing that it's so difficult to collect for fun, not profit in what is probably one of the most mineral rich states!
