My brother and I are trying to plan a rock hunting trip to for his kids this summer, I live in central missouri and he lives in northeast Missouri. He has a site where he knows that he can find geods, but we would like to find some other stuff. Does anyone know locations within a days drive that we can find some neat stuff for the kids? (I wouldnt mind finding some cool stuff too)

I would certainly try and look for some Mozarkite- the Missouri state rock. Here's a link to get you started. www.mozarkite.com/If you contact them- I'm sure they can put you on the right track. Steve

Hey Bric, I live in Jefferson City. There is a man in Sedalia who has Mozarkite on his land, he charges a price but it is reasonable. I have been wanting to find more places to hunt too. PM me if you want his name and phone #. john
I just went and looked at the link above. Linville Harms is the guy I know.

Puppie96 & I (& probably others) have written about the gravel bar at the Chain of Rocks. It is in Illinois, but it is just across the Mississippi River from the northern tip of St. Louis. If they are old enough to know better than to get more than an couple of inches into the river and to leave the dead fish alone, it is a good place to take kids. Anything from the Missouri River and upper Mississippi River watershed (a huge area!) that can get washed down a river might end up on this gravel bar.
Our rock club (St. Louis Mineral & Gem Society) took a trip to the Silver Mines Recreation Area a bit south (couple of hours drive, I think) of St. Louis a while back. We found lots of quartz and some interesting, small specimens of galena, chalcopyrite, and others. We had to hike a ways (half mile?) on a sometimes-rough trail to the old mine's tailings pile, which is not a safe place for little ones. I would not take anyone younger than about twelve to that site.
Please let me know if you want details about either of these sites.
The other field trips we have taken as a club were to private property that is not normally accessible to individuals.

Hi Brad, I have some friends in Dexter and have/will be making more trips over there over the summer your couple of hours south sounds like that area or at least close. Any idea where to take kids around there? The oldest is 8 and has a great interest in rocks so want to take them all somewhere. Thanks for any help

Hi spikeict!
I'm sorry I can't help with the Dexter area. I would not take young kids to the Silver Mines RA. Wait a few years, please.
I'm sure they would enjoy the COR gravel bar, but it is a long drive from Dexter. There are probably other gravel bars on the Mississippi further south, closer to Dexter, but I don't know any specifics.
