I just found this site whilst looking for somewhere in the U.K. to take my son looking for fossils and rocks. My name is Glyn, I'm 34 and I live in South Manchester, England. My son Jordan (who's 8) is the one that really has a passion for rocks (he tells me he wants to be a geologist when he grows up!). For the past five years he has been facinated by them and I must say, it has made me quite interested too. . He says his favorite rock/mineral is Blue John.. I have to agree, Blue John is beautiful and the mine is only about 30 miles from where we live.. I think a trip there next week will be appropriate!

Hi Glyn and welcome to the site. That is an unusual name, never heard it before. Is it common over there? Anyhow, it's great that Jordan is a rock lover and you encourage and support him. Cheers, Don

Hi again and thanks for the warm welcome! . My name is ancient Welsh and is very common in Wales (I think it means valley). Jordan is really excited about going to the caves at weekend! He cant wait! He also says hello to you all too. I'll try and get some pics this weekend and post them on here. I was talking to a friend of mine over a couple of beers yesterday about looking for something to process the rocks Jordan likes to find and he told me about a shop less than 6 miles away from my house. It sells everything to do with minerals and gems! I never even knew it was there so we're going to check it out tomorrow. I was told that this guy also deals in rocks and minerals from all around the world.. Here's the address for anyone who's interested www.manchesterminerals.co.uk/Thanks everyone.. speak to you all soon

Hello Glyn and Jordan,
I envy you going to the caves in search of rock!
I used to do some cave exploring myself in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Generally old abandon gold and silver mines.
I don't know if you have the problem with methane gas in your counrty, like we had in Colorado. You really have to be careful with it, as it can be lethal. Not trying to be a burr under the saddle, I just thought that I would share some of the concerns that we had when we were cave diving.
Do you walk in or do you have to do any climbing/repelling on ropes to get to a better area of the cave? I sure wish that I could go along with you, as it sounds like a blast.
The best I have ever done was in an old mine shaft between Alma, Colorado and Breckenridge, Colorado (there are litterally hundreds of old gold and silver mines in that area of Colorado). We repelled down to 250 feet below the surface and actually found some free gold. Free gold is gold that runs in a vein of quartz, so you can break up the quartz and pick the gold out. It wasn't a lot of gold approx 100.00 worth - not bad for a days worth of goofing, especially when we had to climb back out of the mine (now that is a lot of work!).
Oops ... I am rambling on ... sorry about that!
Above all ... keep safety first and enjoy your trip!!!
Welcome aboard!
John

Hi Everyone, I'm sorry that I've not posted for a while but some low life broke into my house and stole quite a few things.. including my pc! Anyhow, I have a new one now as the insurance finally paid me..
Jordan has started the process of tumbling some gemstones about 4 weeks ago now and they are on the final polishing stage. Should be finished this tuesday so i'll try and post some pics of them as soon as i can. There's a mixture of rose quartz, snow quartz, clear quartz and the most beautiful tiger's eye i've ever seen! There's also a mixture of purples and greens that i'm not too sure of the names..
Jordan is really excited about the clear quartz as it seems to have dead flies in the middle.. is this a normal thing or is it quite rare? He was facinalted when I told him they could be millions of years old!
It's good to be back here, Jordan says hello to everyone. Thanks for the warm welcome to everyone too!
Glyn.
