Hi My name is Cher and I live in NE Minnesota, up in the Iron Range. I've gone rock hunting off and on for many years but have just recently decided that I wanted to get a tumbler and do a little more. Specifically, I want to make stepping stones for my grandkids. Kind of a "Keepsake" thing and I thought it would be neat to decorate them and spell their names out with polished stones.
I have lots and lots of questions, there's so much to learn, so any help will be greatly appreciated.
I've really enjoyed the gorgeous pics and interesting threads, this is a great board.

Said it before, I'll say it again HEY ROSEBUD! ;D Glad to have you aboard. If you can find a smiley for "I'm a loonatic" Place it after that statement. We have a lot of fun here and learn from each other. Hop right in. You don't think I earned "god" status from sitting here reading, do ya?

Hello Cher, Welcome, it's always good to see new members . Your idea sounds great and I bet it would be fun to make them as well. Are you considering on selling them as a craft item, once you make them for your grandkids? You could custom make them for perspective customers. You never know where the rocks will lead you ... Have a great weekend, John

LOL Cookie, this one's for you. Thanks for the warm welcome. This definitely looks like a fun place to "pull up a rock and sit a'spell". Hmmmm no John, I hadn't thought of trying to sell them after making them for my grandkids. Can't imagine what the shipping would be, but maybe I could find a local market for them. Definitely a thought. It's going to be a challenge just to learn how to make the darn things.

Hi Rosebud! I was married to a man from Grand Rapids, who was born in Virginia. His dad was a welder at a Taconite mine. His mom's folks came from Ely and his dad's came from the far northwestern part of the state (his birthplace is now part of the reservation). His grandmother never went "shopping", she went "trading!" We were marrried on a lake about twenty miles north of GR, at a Lutheran church camp. It would have been our 26th aniversary this month if he hadn't decided to stray about 15 years ago!
Welcome to this great place. I don't need another hobby, but these folks make it sound so fun and easy that I think I am going to get hooked. They have great humor, generous spirits, and wonderful patience.
Do you know what kind of rocks you can find up there? It seems that since someone has probably done a lot of the digging already, you might make some interesting finds. What kinds of stones are found with iron mines, folks? Nancy
