Hello everybody! After a friend recommended the Rock Tumbling Hobby site to me I explored the site and your message board for a while. It seems to be a really nice site with a user board with lots of useful advice and very nice members, so I just decided to join! I’m really new to R&M and tumbling and actually got into this because of my tropical fish aquarium hobby. I usually collect R&M from the beach (mainly) because of their beauty and rounded shapes to add to my aquarium. I always test the chemistry of the aquarium in order to see if the rocks added to the water do not alter the ph or hardness of the water. Now after reading your posts I really got motivated to learn about rocks, minerals and tumbling! I just ordered a couple of books (haven’t received yet) to learn how to identify the rocks and minerals that I have and find (not an easy task). Hopefully the books will also help. These are the names of the books: National Audubon Society Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals and Simon & Schuster's Guide to Rocks and Minerals Using the expertise of your user board in the post “ Re: Newbie question” I also ordered a Lortone Tumbler 33B, double barrel because it seems that I could also purchase and add three additional 1.5 barrels and use them instead of the two - 3 pounds barrels included with the tumbler, when needed. I could see these useful when tumbling small quantities of rocks, barrels for each grit step, saving $ in grit materials, etc. I will buy the 3 small barrels after I get some experience with my new tumbler. Unfortunately I didn’t read the “ Vendors - The Good the Bad and the Ugly. “ section in time and I had an “ugly” experience with a vendor , but I also found what I think will be a really GREAT vendor ;D ! I’m expecting my new tumbler next week and I will leave my good and bad experiences in the Vendors board which is really an excellent resource! Well, I guess I wrote enough for the moment, thanks to all for creating such a wonderful place! I will ask questions once in a while and will try to contribute with things that I know, eventually with experience and new knowledge gained I could be more useful to all. Thank you, thank you, thank you ! I'm very happy to be here! Yes I'm a june baby! How did you figure that out? Ha-ha-ha! Well, I am new to this and I just collect beautiful rocks when I go the beach. The other day I went for a hike and got some rocks but I really don't know what they are. I will post some photographs soon at the photographs section to see if I could figure out what they are. I don't know yet of any great rock hunting places, but hopefuly I will learn about this with time. Thanks again to both of you for your welcome!

Hi Moonstone, welcome to the addiction. Do you have a Photo Bucket account? It's free and that's a great place to start for posting pics. I can never remember the formula for posting directly to the board, but posting a direct link to the pic is easy. And someone can walk you thru changing the html address to put it directly on the board. I don't do it often enough 'cause I don't have a digital camera See ya on the boards ;D cookie

Hey Moonstone,
Hello and welcome!
Looking forward to seeing you on the board ...
I'm in Southwestern Kansas, not much for collecting material in this area ... but, it you ever need any cow pies ... I can fill your order!
You know for nasty neighbors, whining co-workers, etc.
See ya,

Hello cookie, John & Cher!!! You are the latest members welcoming me aboard! Thanks a lot for your postings ;D Cookie I just got a Photo Bucket account ! Posting to a link sounds easy maybe I should try that one first. I just have to resize the pictures in order to make them load faster. Digital cameras are very convenient, once you start using them you get hook on them. I have a good 35mm minolta maxxum and I haven't touch it since I got my tiny digital! You can take hundred of pictures with a high memory card and you don't have to pay for developing them. I don't print them I just collect them in digital albums. You'll probably get hook on one when you try them! By the way the quality is not as good as a regular 35mm but it is quite acceptable Oh John! I will probably be ordering some "Cow Pies" from you for some dear friends! Ha-ha-ha!!! I had a friend who lived in Wichita for many many years and never saw a tornado, as soon as she left the state there was a tornado in that area! I have only seen a tornado once while in Florida. It was huge but very far far away and it really impressed me. I hope you never get close to one. We are expecting a big earthquake in CA and we always have drills for them. I experienced some, the experiences are just terrifying and 15 seconds can feel as an eternity. ;D Hi Cher! Yes I agree with you, people in here are just great! I just love your cute smiley waving!!! Once I get the time I will try to add a personalized little icon for my postings, maybe a picture of a moon, or a rock from the moon. ;D Bye now

Welcome to the board moonstone. Sorry to disagree with you right off the bat but, digital images can be as good as 35mm. I have a friend who is a professional photographer and she uses a digital almost exclusively. Then again she paid several hundred for the camera she uses. So I guess it depends on the digital camera you have. Just like a 35mm the quality of pics depends on whether you have a high-end camera or a point and shot. I personally have a point and shot digital. And I'm happy with the pics I get. Course I just take "pickshers" not professional photographs! Otter

Thanks for your welcoming Otter! ;D Don't worry about disagreeing with me, it is always good to be exposed to different sides of issues! I really think digital is the way to go, specially the late tech gear, but unfortunately the really good camers are still too expensive (at least for me;D!) Previously I was just generalizing about point & shoot digital cameras (relatively inexpensive), they are quite good now but eventually will become a lot better. I am quite happy with my small cybershot, the small size makes it very convenient for all sorts of trips. Bye now and thanks again Otter
