Hello to one and all. I'm Wankle (long story!), and I'm based in Berkshire, England. Nice to meet you all. Needless to say, I'm new to all this rock business. My family - consisting of Me (Wankle), The Mrs (MBE), & Daughters (Bumpy and Spud) - have been intending to get into stone polishing for years, but simply never got round to it. We've just got back from holiday where we spent a week in a little riverside cottage in Cornwall, and the place was littered with really beautiful stones. We came back with thousands of them. As soon as we got back, we piled onto the Internet and avidly looked up everything we could find about stone polishing. We ordered a tumbler and all the stuff from www.tideswel.demon.co.uk/tumblers/tumblers.htm (which hasn't arrived yet ) and can't wait to get stuck in. When it comes, I'm going to have to find somewhere to actually run it without annoying the neighbours!! I'm going to post a message over on the "Where do members find naturally occuring [sic] specimens" thread, cos I think I might be onto something!! Hope to be able to post all the updates as and when we get some results.

hello to the entire family of Wankles....
greetings!
this site's originator is British (thanks again, Andy), so you should get together and trade locations. i've always been fond of the Devonshire/Cornwall area, but never loaded up the suitcases with rock before returning stateside.
my favorite restaurant in the whole world is in Reading (Berks), called the Hong Hong just down the street from Curries Electronics Store. order the crispy duck, you are in heaven.
welcome to the board, hope you your tumbler soon, you'll have fun and enjoyment for the whole family, and a lot of good laughs in here to boot!

Thanks very much for your kind welcome, I just know we're going to enjoy posting and chatting here.
I'm trying to organise a decent digital camera so I can take some piccies of the stones we brought back from holiday. Perhaps you more experienced "rockies" might be able to identify them (I'm a Philistine, they're just stones to me!). When you see them, I think you'll agree, they're quite remarkable for stuff picked up in the "wild"!
Strange that KrazyDiamond should live on the other side of the world, but her favourite eatery is about half a mile from where I live!! The world is certainly shrinking!!
In answer to Shorty, Bumpy is so called because you could put her on an airport runway, and she'll find something to bump into! She bumps into everything... Trees, lampposts, the occasional house if it doesn't move out the way quickly enough!! With Spud, her proper name is Katie, and when she was tiny, she spoke her name as Tatie. I told her that a tatie was a manky old spud. It stuck!
Looking forward to a long and lasting friendship with you,
Wankle.
P.S. I'll have to see if I can dig out a more appropriate avatar!

Hello Wankle Family, I am located in Southwestern Kansas (USA). Not much in the way of rock collecting areas around here! But, we do live in the middle of the best collecting areas of the USA ... yup, 600 miles in either direction will get you there ;D. Your kids will love the transformation from just a plain old rock to a nice and shiney tumbled stone. Then with some bell caps and a little glue ... they can make their own jewelry Have a great day! John

Welcome Mr. and MS. Wankle and the whole bunch of you Wanks! (why do I feel like I just cursed someone out?) Youre going to have a lot of fun and learn more than you ever wanted to know here (we tend to get off the suject occationaly ). I can relate to Bumpy. Such is our lot in life, to allways look in the mirror, see a bruise in an unusual place and say "When did that happen?" cookie

Finally got the tumbler and all the stuff. It took Tideswell THREE WEEKS to deliver the order. Spuddy & Bumps had almost given up on it and started turning back into couch potatoes We were so busy choosing our favourite stones to put in on the *first run*, we completely forgot to take some photos for the "before & after" pages It's sat in the kitchen on the draining board whirring away. It's quieter than we thought it would be, but It won't be long before MBE wants it put in the shed Seeing there's a mixture of all sorts of stones, we decided we'd check on Thursday (after three days) and take out any which are ready for the next stage. We can't wait to see what they turn out like BTW Spuddy, Bumps and MBE have got their own logins now, so they'll be posting piccies of their own best efforts. Take it easy on them

depending on what kind of stones you are starting with, three days in coarse grind may not be enough time, sift through some of the posts in here and try to instill patience, for good results depend on it..........
did you get instructions with you tumbler? follow them!
go at least a week in coarse grit, unless already have unbelievable smooth rocks to start with!
you won't regret it! KD

Excellent advice. I had my first batch in for a week and after checking it out, have it back in there for at least another week. Just wasn't pleased with the shaping so knew I had to buy a few cups of patience and start them over. I agree with KD, unless you're starting with really smooth rocks already, a week will not be enough.

>did you get instructions with you tumbler? We did, yes, and that's where I got the three days from. It said check after three days, and if not done properly leave it on for the week Spose we'll all just have to find some patience within ourselves Thanks for your advice, we'll certainly follow it and post the results. W.
