Hello, Stephane! probably the easiest way to get all you need is a tumbling kit with all the stuff you will need to get started. i would suggest you get your dad to buy you the Lortone 3A Tumbler Kit #081-91...it sells for about $80.00, but it includes a 3 pound tumbler, all the grit and polish plus a batch of rough stones to start with and all the instructions you will need.... try this link and then find a dealer near you or check some of the other links in here for good vendors: www.Lortone.comGood Luck! Welcome Stephanie and your Dad. The 2 godly characters above me gave some sound advise. That's pretty much how I started too last december. And I realy like that Lortone tumbler , it's very simple to operate.
Greetings from Jack in New Zealand...that's 2 timezones away from that bigger island ...called Australia.
Have fun tumbling

Hello Stephanie,
I admire your willingness to learn about tumbling at nine years old. This hobby is so much fun, I think you will really like it.
What will really be fun, is when you learn about rocks and tumbling them ... then you can teach your Dad how to do it ;D
You and your Dad can go looking for rocks and then you will be able to tumble them and make some very pretty jewelry or other items. Look in the Member Photographs section and you will see a lot of different kinds of rocks and projects that people are making.
Welcome to the board, it's nice to see younger people learning about the wonderful world of rocks.
If you ever have a question ... do not feel like your question might be too silly or dumb. As there are no silly or dumb questions ... that is how we learn. If we do not know, we need to ask. There are a lot of very smart people here that know more about tumbling rocks than I do, and they are always here, if you ever have a question.
Have a great weekend,
John

hi Stepanie, I was about your age when I first found a rock that was so pretty and I've been picking them up everywhere I go ever since! (And I'm probably older than your dad!).
You should try just finding rocks and picking them up anywhere you go...the beach, the road, the backyard. Try to get ones about the size of a marble. And when you think you have enough weigh them on the bathroom scale. 2 or three pounds should be enough. Then try tumbling them. You'll be amazed at what the beauties that you've collected yourself. And you'll be able to give them as gifts to your friends too. I guarantee they'll be impressed!

Stephanie, The first thing you want to do is get rocks that look good when they are wet with water. If you like the look of the rocks when they are wet, they will look good when polished.

Greetings All,
Hello Stephanie and Dad, and welcome to rock tumbling. It's a hobby that takes a little patience but not too much in the way of hard work. And as you start to produce polished rocks you can use them to make your own jewelry, there are a number of threads on the main board about wire wrapping.
The Lortone 33b is a great starting tumbler, make sure to save one barrel for the polish stage only! It may seem to waste time at first to only use one barrel but having grit in the polish stage will really mess your rocks up. Also, plan on buying some extra grit, especially the 60/90 as some rocks need multiple runs of the first stage. The smoother they are coming out of 60/90 the better they will be when you finally polish them.
Good luck and let us know how you are doing. Never hesitate to ask questions. And have your parents check out the site too, especially the photgraphs section, so they can see what you will be able to do with your tumbler.

Hi Stephanie, Look through the forum for Vendors, the good, the bad and the ugly. There's lots of info there on good people to buy from on the interent. I've only dealt with one so far and that's the Rock Shed but they are terrific to deal with. Check out their website, they do sell rough stones for polishing. You can also do some searches for "Indiana Common Stones" or something like that and you might find some info that way as to what you can look for locally. Have fun! Cher
