Hi
I'm in the UK.
I've just bought my first rock tumbler after wanting to get one for years. Still haven't plucked up the courage to set a load going ;D
This looks like a nice place to read up on the subject.
Any tips or suggestions will be very welcome !

Hi Rose, Welcome to the forum! One thing that's good to do is read back through the posts in the general forum. Lot of terrific information there that will help you. If you have any questions about what you've read, post it in there, there's plenty of good people here who'll be more than happy to help you out.

Thanks for the welcome everyone ;D Yes I know - but from reading up here I've discovered I need another barrel - I knew I needed separate ones for polishing but didnt realise about the grades of grit. So I'm going to wait until I have enough barrels. I dont want to start and then come to a stop because of postage delays etc. There are no supply shops local to me. Anyway I won two ebay auctions last night for some rough rocks, jasper and opal. So will get started soon.

Welcome to the board, Rose!
if you start one barrel now.....by the time you get the spares you will be ready to use them. to be honest, if you can clean your barrels meticulously, you can use them for all stages.......it's just easier to keep one for just polish..
where in the UK are you?

Hi everyone !
Yes - Hubby has talked me into setting it going today. I spent yesterday clearing out our pantry for it to go in so its out the way of cats and kids, that jobs needed doing for months but I had an incentive to do it yesterday ! ;D

Hopefully it will be ours as well some day! We are trying to get ourselves together to apply to imigrate to Canada, my husband has family there and we absolutely love the place ! Thanks for the tip with the barrels ! I'm thinking of changing to 220 grit on Saturday.

Thanks rollingstone Thats a nice pic! It really is a stunning place I dont think we visited that lake last time so will make sure we go next time - we are hoping to visit in Spring next year (Mr Visa allowing ) We also want to go to Lake Moraine near Jasper which we didnt have time to last time. I changed the 80 grit yesterday, on the fifth day, going off the instructions on the home page. And so was thinking of giving it a few days with the new stuff and doing the 220 at the weekend. Thanks for the tips on looking at the rocks, I really have no idea of what I'm looking for - I opened the barrel and my husband said "Well?" I said " Yes there still there !" Very ! I'm dying to see the finished products ! My kids keep asking when the rocks will be ready.

DONT GET THE GRITS MIXED UP!!! that was my mistake the first time. also, make sure you compleatly clean everyrthing in between stages, it other words make sure no coarse grit ends up in your medium or fine,

Yes thats the one ! I'm hopeless with names. Yes, I'll make sure - I got a very funny look at Tesco checkout the other day when I bought three sieves in one go. Checkout girl said to me you know you have picked up three of these. I think she was wondering why anyone would need that many !
